This is about my dog Kimball. He turned 7 years old last October. When he was just a little over a year old he developed osteo-sarcoma (bone cancer) in his left leg. His vet said he could remove the leg thus remove the pain. He said it would give him 6 months to a year of good life.
Well, on May 8th of this year (2009) he will be a 7 year survivor of cancer. This is not unheard of but it is extremely rare. Please don't say “poor dog” as he is a happy boy and does what any other dogs do. He runs, plays and buries his bones.
He's an amazing dog and I like to share his story whenever I can. We can learn a big lesson from the critter world…they don't have time to feel sorry for themselves. They just use what they have and carry on with life.
Love You Kimball

OMG - 7 years? Wow - what an amazing boy you have. I agree with Jerry - please, please spend a few minutes writing out some more of your story and send in some pictures - it's such an inspawration to all of us and especially those who are turning away from amputation because they may not think their fur kid with have a decent amount of quality of life or any life for that matter!
A huge heartfelt congratulations - I'm certain that Kimball's length of survival has much to do with the loving and amazing home he must have with you.

Wow..Kimball!! Such a handsome and happy boy. Kimball is a true inspiration and hope for all of us here living with and fighting Osteosarcoma. I think all of us here on this forum would LOVE to hear more on his story and course of treatment that has helped him fight this cancer and beating such extraordinary odds! Any details and information you can share with us would be so appreciated. We can all only hope that our furry buddies can too live such a happy and long life after being diagnosed with bone cancer.
Kudos to Kimball and his pawrents!! You guys rock.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Like everyone else here, I try to prepare myself for the most probable outcome, but it really is so inspirational to be reminded that there really is a percentage of dogs whose lives are not shortened by this diagnosis.
And what a *beautiful* boy he is!!!!!

I'm sorry I haven't been back here to read all the wonderful post in reply to Kimball's story. I had trouble working this forum system...not the greatest at internet.
Kimball is doing fine. He is enjoying the Spring weather. He likes to be outside.
I've been thinking about what else I can tell you all about Kimball's treatment. The only thing I can think to add is, at about 14 months he became VERY sick. The vet said he had and auto-immune illness. Kimball was having trouble maintaining weight. His vet said to feed him whatever he would eat. As to meds he was on predisone and a chemo med. I don't recall the name of the pill. That is all that has been done medically. Kimball has lots and lots of friends. He is well known. I believe all the prayers and positive energy he receives is a big reason he is still here and going strong. I hope this helps. I'll try and add some pics. sorry I don't know how.
Peace,
Kimball and his mom
This is wonderful story of surviving cancer and beating the odds .. thanks for sharing.
Funny you mention auto immune disorder, prior to Buster getting cancer he had an auto immune disorder of his eye and was on similar meds. In a way I feel the meds may have contributed to his cancer … he was on Imuran along with the predisone at the time. I'll never forget the vet tech waring me how strong the Imuran med was...
