I had to take Kiera to the vet this afternoon.  I noticed her incision from being spayed wasn't healing quite right and the vet agreed with me.  So she has to stay overnight; the vet is going to reopen it and make sure the abdominal wall is healing properly and then put in a drain and stitch her back up.

I felt so bad leaving her there; kind of a lot going on to get used to in the past few days.  But I know she is so happy-go-lucky and probably isn't worried a bit.  It's hard to not feel bad though.

I hope all goes well.  I will update later.

Thanks,

Andy

Poor Kierra.  She must be so confused but it is better for her to br there.  Hopefully she will be home very soon.

Well the vet didn't have time to get to Kiera tonight, so she's scheduled for first thing in the morning.  She did get a shot of penicillin and a belly wrap for the evening.  If everything goes good, she should be coming home tomorrow afternoon.

I know a lot of you are dealing with much bigger problems and this is very minor, but when it's your baby (and a brand new one at that) it's very nerve-wracking.   So thank you all for your time and well wishes.

Andy,

I would like to assure you that we care what is happening to Kierra.  She is your little girl and it is hard when things are not going good whether is it stitches, reactions to meds or lung mets.  They are all hard.  Please know that you can post and we care about Kierra and are glad her problems are "minor".  Is there such a thing?

We don't discriminate!   It's a support board for our babies.  You'll get support for a 4-legged one, too!  We love them all!  I don't have life-threatening problems with Comet since she doesn't have cancer, just a deformity.  I whine about her maladies and get wonderful compassion!  I even cried and moped for months about losing my normal dog and got lots of support!

So, keep us updated on your beautiful Kiera!  It's a bump in the road and it's scary but - in  a couple of days - everything will be fine.  Go take a long hot bath or a walk when you need to relax!

And post all you want here!!!

Ouch. When I was fostering dogs one of ours tore out his stitches and was in constant pain for a good week. The vet put in new stitches and the poor fellow was stuck wearing an e collar for over a week. I know what it's like to worry about a new dog. We all have things that happen to our pups that is scary, even if it isn't as life threatening as cancer. I'm sure Kiera will be better in a few days, just be patient and show her tons of love!

Thanks again everyone.  Kiera is home now.  The vet said the tissue around the incision looked "angry" (red and swollen) but that the abdominal wall was healing.  She put in a few stitches there just to be sure and then restitched the incision (rather than surgical glue) and also put in a drain tube.  So Kiera is now sporting a lovely Elizabethan collar, but happy to be home.  She'll be on antibiotics for a while just to make sure nothing gets started; drain tube comes out in 5 days and stitches out in 14 days.

I also learned some great news!  Our vet has her very own tripawd at home!  I was so excited to hear that.  She highly recommended getting a bootie for the front paw to avoid injury.  It's so nice to have not only an awesome vet, but someone who knows first-hand the special needs of tripawds.  She said Kiera is at a perfect weight (43 lbs).  She said she's on the skinny side but in a healthy way and very muscular.  She doesn't want her to gain any weight.

So good news for now.  Thanks again for all your well wishes.

Andy

Now, I'm jealous!  I want a vet who has a tripawd!!!!  At least they would understand the difficulties.  When Comet had her knee surgery and was a 2 legged dog, my vet just seemed to act like it was no big deal to keep her from using the surgery leg. I'm not sure there was any comprehension that I had a 2 legged dog!

Sorry, I got side tracked -- glad to hear Kiera is home and healthy!  Keep us posted on her!
