So I should give an update on Katniss. Especially after everything that happened to her the first two weeks after amputation surgery. (Phantom limb pain and the episode where she bit my husband because of the pain.) Life has been nuts - not because of Katniss - since Feb., so I haven't been active on here like I'd like to be. I'd like to help out others.
Katniss had her front, right leg amputated in mid-Feb. due to osteosarcoma tumor on her shoulder. Although the tumor was considered a "grade 1" - its location being so close to the bone gave her oncology team some concern, and they recommended 5 rounds of doxorubicin/chemo just to make sure we get any cancer cells that could have crept into her bones.
Good news - Katniss is super healthy for an English Bulldog. All of her lung, liver, stomach and other scans and test all come back negative for any signs of cancer as we approach the final treatment in a week. She gets "the works" for tests prior to her last treatment on May 3, but I totally expect the all clear.
Katniss has adjusted SUPER WELL to being a tripawd. Sure - she stumbles sometimes. But she just hops around our house like nothing is wrong. She has taken to getting on my son's bean bag chairs to sleep. And while I thought she'd get stuck in them, she scooches her way out. She has been to our beach condo, which has about 5 stairs. And with the help of her harness, she does really well with those stairs.
She does so well chewing on toys with only one front leg. She has so much strength built up now that she walks herself way out into our yard to do her business and only has to stop maybe 1-2 times, very briefly, on her way back.
I know we are fortunate that she has adapted so well to three legs (especially considering awkward Bulldog bodies). And I know we are fortunate that her her tumor looks like it made it out clean without spreading. And that her treatments have been so well received with no side effects.
Just want folks to know that while the initial recovery is hard. Really hard. It does get a lot better.
Now if we can just get that stubborn spot on her back to grow back fur. It's the first thing they shaved for testing in early Feb. and she still has a bare square back there.
WHEW! This is such fantastic news, I can't thank you enough for returning to share how things were going. Yes, Katniss' recovery was TOUGH. But you guys did it, you made it through and now look at her, queen of the castle and loving life! YAY!
We so rarely have members with Bulldogs join us, that it's wonderful to see Katniss' bounce-back story. You have already helped more people than you know. THANK YOU for sharing the great news
