We are new to the site and eager to learn how how to keep healthy and happy.

Here is our story:

We lost our beloved Patch over 3 months ago to a sudden, unknown illness. It was devastating to the whole family. He was only 7 years old and had recently started thyroid medication. He was losing weight and had much more energy than he had in a while. Walking outside to potty one afternoon and he collapsed. We have not been without a dog in 25 years, but this loss was almost the breaking point.

My son was the first to started looking for another dog,  albeit, half heartedly. I then started looking. It was for him and if it made him happy, then I was happy. He was going to move out on his own soon and would need the friend. Border collie was the breed, but there was never the right one.

I walked in from work Friday and caught the tail end of a news segment that a local shelter does and saw this poor Tripawd just cleared for adoption. He was scared of the cameras and masses of people and was trying to hide behind the young ladies legs. Minus the missing patches of short hair, he was a spitting image of our beloved Patch! I told my husband this was the one I wanted and went to their website and found his information. The next morning, we went to visit with him and he was so much happier than his television debut the night before! He is home with us now and has settled right in. He is an 11 month old border collie/possible Whippet mix. They think he was hit by a car. Someone found him limping down the road and brought him in. Back left leg had to be amputated.

It has not slowed him down at all! He whips around the yard just as fast as a four legged border and is just as happy as he can be. He does have a fear of cars, however. We took him to the pet supply and while he was walking across the parking lot, he heard a car approaching and started to turn and really bucked against the leash and harness. It is something we will work on.

Jackpot will probably end up changing to BlackJack. We have a call into our own vet for a complete checkup and medical records have been requested from the previous vet. His surgery is only 3 weeks old, but looks amazingly well. He does have an itchy spot that I am trying to discourage him from scratching, too.

Sorry this turned out so long. Happy to be here, though. Any tips and advice on keeping the other leg healthy is greatly appreciated!

Welcome! You're future forum posts will not require moderation.

What a great story. Can you please tell us the name of the shelter and news station?

I took Jack to my personal vet for a checkup this week. He had some acne type bumps on his face and ears that I asked her to look at. She biopsied 2 of them and has sent them off. She is thinking he was shot with rocksalt or some other substance, or may have some type of cancer. When she looked at the biopsy herself, she stated there were too many nuclei, which could be caused by either of the aforementioned items.

We also had a look at his x-rays before he had to be amputated. This poor baby was in pain for quite awhile before he was taken in and helped. He has been through so much in his short 11 months and is still such a happy loving boy! I am absolutely in love with this beautiful boy!!

Awww congratulations, he did hit the Jackpot! I think I remember seeing his story on Twitter. So glad he found a great family.

You're awesome for taking him to the vet and not waiting. The bumps are probably nothing serious but it's always good to have them checked out. Keep us posted on that OK?

It's no wonder Jackpot has some challenges to deal with after being treated so badly. Just glad there are more good people in the world like you, than the bad ones. Our Wyatt Ray came from a similar situation before we adopted him but he's great now and after lots of training work, we're a solid, stable pack. I know Jackpot will get there too!

P.S. Go Aggies! Wyatt is a fan, the vet school helped us in a big way when he had a mystery illness.

Yes, Jerry, those Aggies are wonderful in many forms of animal research! We also have birds and A&M is making strides in a leading killer in avian medicine, as well as canine and feline. And the football team is pretty amazing, too! Haha! We are big fans! Glad they could help your Wyatt!

Sally, your PTSD link sounds just like BlackJack! Will be tossing a toy one second and the next he is circling the yard as fast as his legs can take him! I just let him run it out.

We have really concentrated on letting him ride with us for short trips this week. He goes straight into a carrier and seems to be improving. He stress panted the first couple times, but has improved greatly! Without a carrier, he is on the floor, trying to dig under the seats. Still does not care for a harness being put on, but it is necessary since he is not leash trained. We went to watch the eclipse last night. He had no panting and laid his head down and relaxed a bit

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! It amazes me how they can go through so much and still be so sweet!
