Hunter is our HERO.

He has been in our hearts and lives since we brought him home at 8 weeks of age and he could walk under the kitchen chairs!  In a few years he became a phenomenal pheasant hunting machine. Everyone who hunted with him said he was simply the best.

In May, 2012, at the age of 8, Hunter went through a right rear leg amputation and 6 rounds of chemotherapy because of osteosarcoma.  But, every step of the way Hunter exceeded our expectations and the expectations of his doctors.... He is the definition of a Happy Lab!

Hunter continues to bring smiles to everyone who meets him, especially children.  Everyone knows him as "Super Dog" and the clinics are happy to talk about him whenever I call.  Hunter wears a Super Dog bandanna when he goes places and has even been known to attend chemotherapy sessions in his Super Dog costume!  Hunter is still with us, even after his December, 2012 lung metastasis diagnosis. Once again, he is exceeding the medial expectations.  We love him very much and he has shown us how to be strong at the hardest time in our lives.

We plan on celebrating his 10th birthday this July 27th!

His blog can be read at:  http://www.supe.....ipawds.com

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.

Can I be the first to agree that Hunter is exceptional.  But then Julie, take a look at his pawrents -- they say an acorn doesn't fall far from the tree and you and Scott have given Hunter every possible opportunity to excel.  Hunter has taken those opportunities and has worked hard and succeeded at being Super Dog.  Go Hunter!!

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

Hunter's story is so inspawrational, you've done a great job illustrating the bond that you two share. Thanks for sharing! Oh, can you see what's going on with your pics? They're not showing up and I'm thinking maybe their privacy settings are turned on so we can't see 'em? We'd love to feature Hunter in Tripawd Tuesday!

Here's a post about adding images if you have questions.

Hi Jerry... the photos show up to me... and I uploaded them into my Flickr account first.  Can you/everyone not see them?

Affirmative. Perhaps the photos are not public.

If Jerry picks Hunter for a future Tripawd Tuesday, we can always grab a couple pics from his Superdog Blog.

Thanks!

Hi, we requested 6 chemo therapy treatments with carboplatin since Hunter tolerated the treatments so well.  He would come home from a treatment acting like he just spent the day at a doggy spa!  We wanted to give him all the chances in the world to kick cancer's A _ _ !!  Our oncologist usually only recommends 4 treatments, but she was willing to try 6 since our Super Dog did so well with them.  After the 1st treatment he may have been a little sleepy, but the subsequent treatments seemed to have no effects on him at all!

Regarding his diet and supplements... here's his MAGIC LIST! :

Supplements:

Arthrisoothe Gold – 1 teaspoon – 2 per day (for his joints and slight arthritis)

Probiotics – ¾ scoop - 2 per day

Livaplex – 1 capsule – 2 per day

K9 Immunity – 6 per day

K9 Transfer Factor – 1 per day

Krill Oil – 2 per day

Artemisinin 100 mg.– 2 per day (late PM)

Butyrex Cal/Mag. 600 mg. - 4 capsules per day (late PM)

Artemix - 3 capsules given with Butyrex (5 days on and then 5 days off) Expensive!

[Artesunate 50mg,Artemisinin 50mg, Artemether 40mg combo]

Vitamin C – 250 mg.– per day

Vitamin E – 200 i.u. – per day

Food:

Fresh is Best Turkey raw diet (10 – 10.5 oz. per meal, 2 X day)

Veggies:

Kale, Spinach, Broccoli, Beans

All of this is blended and given on top of his food every other day.

The Broccoli and Beans are cooked before being blended.

And let's not forget the most important ingredients! ~ ~

Lots of LOVE, ENCOURAGEMENT and ACCEPTANCE!

Would it be OK if we shared Hunter's diet in our Tripawds Nutrition blog ? I know lots of folks would find it useful. Also, how did you decide on the diet, was there a certain resource that helped you decide?

Yes, of course, please share!

We can only hope that it helps other dogs get more time with their families.

This "magic list" is a combination of information from a fellow tripawd (shout out to a fellow chocolate lab Charlie!), our knowledgeable holistic veterinarian, as well as information from the Yahoo Group that deals with Artemisinin .

Here's a link to that group:

http://pets.gro.....ancer/join

We purchase the Arthrisoothe Gold at Cal Vet Supply, the probiotics and krill oil at Mercola.com, the K-9 Immunity and K-9 Transfer Factor at iHerb.com, the Artemisinin at Holleypharma.com, the Artemix at Hepalin.com, the Butyrex at Amazon.com (bigger supply for less money than at Holleypharma), the Vitamin C and Vitamin E at Walmart (any brand name is fine), and the Livaplex comes from our holistic vet.

His raw diet comes from a local pet store and it is sold in a case of 32 lbs.  8 - 4 lb. tubes of meat. Very easy to thaw out one tube overnight and cut up into weighed sections for feeding.  He goes through 4 lbs. every 3 days, so one case about every 24 days.  It cost about $85 / case here in Wisconsin.   We are feeding turkey after feeding chicken, which is a "hot" food, for too long.  There are different meats and you can try them all.

Our doses are based on Hunter's weight of 70-74 lbs. which fluctuates.

Thanks, Hunter's Mom

Aww thanks so much for the scoop and allowing us to share. We appreciate your letting us post it in the blog, can't wait! If you'd like to share any pics we're happy to include them.

Oh just wanted to throw this out there...the next time you're  shopping online for his supplements (or anything really) we hope you'll consider going through our Amazon or Nutrition blog...a portion of proceeds bought through any of those links, whether or not you buy that specific product we link to or something entirely different in that same place, goes to helping the Tripawds Nation stay online as long as the search starts there. Thanks for considering it :)
