My 8 year old, 135 pound Alaskan Malamute Homer had been limping for some time and was prescribed Rymadyl for arthritis. Finally in July another Vet in the practice examined his left front leg and discovered a tumor that was confirmed by Xrays. She said the only choice was euthanasia or amputation, which was a complete shock when expecting another drug for the arthritis. I told her that given Homer's size and weight that amputation was probably not an option. We made an appointment with an oncologist and proceded with radiation for pain and chemo to slow the tumor growth. Homer did great on this regime but the limp returned and got progressively worse leading to a trip to his oncologist on October 14th where Xrays revealed a fracture at the tumor site. Since he was already under anesthesia she asked if we would like to say goodbye to him at that point and procede with the euthanasia. I had discovered this website and read how a Great Dane and Newfoundland were doing great and told the doctor I would like to consider amputation afterall. Her experience was that 95% of dogs did great after surgery, the only exception she had encountered were a couple of very overweight giant dogs.
The surgeon was onsite and had immediate availability so the surgery was performed that same afternoon, a Thursday. We were told to be ready to take him home on Saturday or Sunday. Homer has always had problems recovering from anesthesia (had a liver torsion in 2007) so both a vet tech and I got bitten trying to get him up during the next few days. We finally did get him home on Wednesday and, as I was prepared for by reading this forum, began a dreadful 2 week recovery, with little sleep and cleanup of many accidents in the house.
It has now been seven weeks since the operation and Homer is doing great. After some trouble getting around he is moving great, able to get up and down the 3 steps into the house and hop up a ramp for his daily rides; he refuses to move when I attempt to help him with a wrap around lift. I am so glad that I discovered this forum and was able to learn about dogs living with three legs. It was this knowledge that helped me with the decision to go ahead with the amputation, and I am thankful every day for that. Hopefully we will have Homer (who had his 9th birthday on Oct 31) with us for quite some time.
Welcome to our "Tripawds Family". So happy to read that Homer has been doing well since his surgery. It's amazing how well our pups can do post-surgery. What type of cancer did Homer have? Is he still doing chemo?
You have found THE best place for advice and support - mixed with alot of humor too! Sending you some golden hugs, and look forward to hearing more of Homer's journey!

Welcome! You sure did stay quiet for a long time before joining in our fun. Sounds like recovery went pretty and the the big guy is up and doing well. That is always great news!

Yay for Homer!
Thanks so much for joining us and sharing your boy's story. Lots of pawrents with giant breed dogs seek reassurance when they get the same bad news, so it's very helpful when they can hear from others who've been there and made it through the worst part.
You guys have been through a lot, and we are so glad that things are looking up. Where did Homer receive amputation/treatment? Did you opt for chemo? Some people do, some don't. Just curious to see if he's had any side effecs from it.
Funny that you just joined us, because just this week, Tundra, a Mal in Alaska, joined us and is now going through the two weeks of hell. I'm sure his family will find lots of comfort knowing that another big boy made it through! I'm not seeing any forum posts from them yet but you can find his story on the Tripawds Facebook page.
We look forward to following along with your Tripawd journey, keep us posted on how things are going OK?

Welcome Homer!
Oh my! I can't believe you didn't come over sooner! But are sure glad you finally did! Homer sure is a handsome boy (all 135lbs) !
I'm so glad you read about Nova and Cooper (I assume you meant those two - a Great Dane & a Newfie mix). We have other big breeds too! Fortis is 140-150lbs (a cane corso mastiff).
Don't be a stranger! We want to hear about Homer's new life on 3 legs!

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Hi Homer & Pack! We are sorta new too- only 3 weeks post amp. Kenmore is a GSD/Collie mix- was 105 now about 95- front left amp 24 days ago. He is now flying down the 3 front steps, walking, "like a gentleman" down the 5 back steps, jumping up on the fence to greet neighbors and cocking his leg to pee. He does allow my husband to pick him up to be put in the truck...and we went camping the day after the stitches were removed!
I got a lot of hope from these pawesome people and the dogs who share them with us. I've leaned on them and they held my spirits and hope to a level I didn't know I could attain.
Sorry that you are here, but glad to share you travels.
mandy & Kenmore
Homer and pack - yes! we are so glad that you found this group and also that you gave Homer a second chance at life by going ahead with the amputation! I am betting Homer will continue to do just great! Cooper is our Newfie mix and he is slow and laid back ( and big ) and most people didnt feel he was a good candidate for amputation ( he had left front amputated) I had almost made the decision to have him put down as the other option of trying to keep him comfortable until the leg broke - just seemed like NO option to me - but the life in his eyes and his will to live said, we are going to do all we can to help him. I have heard it from others here , and I have noticed it with Cooper - but he seems to have bonded even more with us and is showing us a new depth of love I never saw in him, and if this follows suit with Homer - you have SO much to look forward to! Good luck and we are glad you have shared your story with us!

Welcome Homer and pack! I'm so glad Homer is doing well. He sure is one handsome dude. I have always loved Malamutes. Being that I live in Central Texas, I thought it not wise to get one. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way. Keep up the great work Homer.
You know, you ladies could have waited until after Frotis' ampuversary before ditching him for a younger and only possibly better looking man. He's feeling used and abused! Shame on you I'm sorry Coops………..It's so very tough and unfair being a guy

Wow, Homer is really beautiful. Welcome here Homer and family. Are you going to do more chemo now that he has had the amputation? I don't know how it works if they already did chemo before amputating...
Um, for the rest of you... Sammy is a boy too you know...
I looked on facebook at Tundra, wow, another beautiful Malamute! I hope we can help you and your family with any questions you may have. Maybe you will end up answering some of mine too.

Hooray for Homer! What a beautiful boy! We're looking forward to hearing more about him - and his adventures as a tripawd.

We saw Homer's oncologist last week and everything looks good. She said we can do Xrays (already completed 5 chemo sessions) every few months to check his abdomin for signs of cancer but I don't know if that is a good idea since there would not be too much to be done at that point. He is adjusting very well to three legs, although he still does a faceplant sometimes. He has been on K9 Immunity Plus since the diagnosis and will remain on that. I would like to thank the members of this site for providing information that has made the whole process less frightening and decisions easier to reach. Homer sends hugs and kisses.
