hi I’m glad i found this forum as this is all new to me, i have about 30 years experience of Dobermans’ but have just taken on a young Dobermann girl who because of cruel owners had to have a leg removed and she is also very under weight. The poor girl has had so much to put up with in her short life but with hard work and a lot of love i hope we can get her sorted. i have posted a post asking for help with exercising information so fingers crossed i will pick up some hints to help her get stronger
Many thanks
Chris
Welcome to the site. I have two dobermans. Levi is 6 and was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. He has been a tripawd since October. He adapted fantastically to life on three legs. He was very active on 4 legs, and now nothing is different. We still jog everyday 🙂 I find that he does much better off-leash. The only exercise we did to get him strong was lots of off-leash walking. This way he could go at his own pace and he would let me know when he was tired. Good luck. I would love to see some pics!
Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.
hi chris, welcome to the family. what a saint you are to give this little girl a chance at a loving, forever home. what's her name?? there are many PT suggestions on the site. you might want to do a search on the forums, or look at some the downloads. hopefully someone with more experience with strength training (tracy in maine, who has maggie a border collie has a great blog with videos and such http://www.magg.....ipawds.com) will chime in. we'd love more info on your girl, and definitely pictures – we love pictures…
Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
Sorry you had need of us - but welcome to Tripawds! We would love pictures of your new girl. The book ' Three legs and a Spare' that you can download from the Tripawds was very helpful to me.
Bless your heart for rescuing the poor baby. I hope she's adjusting well to being a tripawd.

Welcome Chris. What is your pups name? That is very sweet of you to take her in and give her a better life! Poor pup.
I think you'll find being a tripawd pawrent to be very rewarding.
I'll second what Levi's mom said. Our pup, Abby, did much better off leash than on. We are lucky to live near a huge off-leash beach/bay. Abby could easily run/play/walk there for an hour every day. But on leash, in our neighborhood, she could only last about 20 min and would need breaks.
I'm sure others will chime in with rehab exercise ideas. For a smile, here's Abby's idea for a core workout:

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. We just replied to your first post, but "push ups" are another good strengthening exercise... have your Dobie girl sit, down, sit, stand, repeat a few times for treats and work your way up to a dozen reps. See our links in the other topic for more helpful exercise tips.

What a sweet girl!! Really wonderful that you rescued her. And so lovely to see a Dobie with her natural tail and ears.

We also do twisting exercises with Ajax to strengthen the core muscles - I think agility dog Maggie has posted some on this site. We don't do the Buja ball but just practice twisting and spinning around on land for treats.
I agree with the person that said off leash walks are the best, and it is good to try to vary the terrain if you can, as I think it works on balance and brings back confidence.
I think you guys will do great!
Oh, Tessy and Jackson are beautiful! (I specially love that they still have their ears and tails! I'd love to see cropping and docking be classified as the animal cruelty that it is...) You are wonderful for rescuing Tessy, although I'm sure you'll come to wonder who really rescued whom...
Best wishes for speedy healing,
Micki

Awww, she's so sweet! I agree, Chili Dawg did best off leash. When he was on a leash he could only do about 20 minutes and then needed a break.
