Hi Tripawd parents,

I thought I would take a quick moment to share Hero's story with you. My fiance and I were looking to adopt a dog from the local SPCA and saw his picture online. It was clearly love at first sight - one ear flopped over, big smile, huge tongue hanging out the side of his mouth - who wouldn't find him adorable? It said he was an amputee from a possible hit by car, but we thought to check him out anyway and keep an open mind.

To be honest, I thought long and hard before going over there. The few family members I spoke to warned me about "all the extra medical issues" I would have to deal with (whatever that means... and anyway, what experience did they have with an amputee dog?!) and I was worried he would be dragging his back. Well, when we got there and the tech let him out, you would have thought she shot a bullet from a  cannon. He couldn't really walk or run as someone normally imagines, but he kind of scooted around in between bounding from place to place.

The tech informed us he had been returned once before, that the family who adopted him already had a dog and that dog was aggressive to him because of his missing leg. This has caused separation anxiety, which has been a slow road of progress, but he is doing better with it. We were determined to do physical therapy with him and work on his walking posture and weight distribution. We couldn't afford expensive water treadmill treatments, but we do work with him every day.

I believe it is paying off, becuase he now stands straight (relatively speaking) and when I take him jogging, people don't notice right away that he is missing a leg. As for extra medical issues, we know he will have back problems down the road and will deal with that when we have to; for now, Hero is just like any other hyper, rambunctious dog and loves to play catch, chase everything, and go jogging with me. We give him joint supplements and do strength and balance training for his back leg in the form of games daily, but that's it for "extras."

The only issue I have is how people perceive him; when I take him running, people will say things like what a good person I am for adopting him. It's almost a back handed compliment; I know they are trying to be nice and are curious. But would these same people say the same thing to the parent of a child who lost a leg?

I don't think adopting Hero is a testament to my character. He isn't handicapped. He's strong and stubborn, like the rest of his family. I try to smile and explain this to people who see him, that he is just missing his spare tire. That a dog doesn't have to be euthanized if they get hit by a car or become sick and need to have surgery. Hopefully Hero can become an ambassador for Tripawds in my area and spread the word.

Hi Hero and family, I'm so hoppy you decided to share your story! Isn't it funny how Tripawds really aren't "special needs" after all? We even have a blind Tripawd here, Nova the Great Dane, who just goes to prove that "handicapped" is such a human thing.

But, I do have to say, that the fact that you are willing to consider adopting Tripawd does show that you are a good human; you see the big picture and don't immediately make assumptions about appearances.  A lot of people just aren't capable of doing that without the "awww, poor doggie" attitude. So I say you are indeed pawesome!

Hero, do you want to say where you are located, so you can find other Tripawds in your area and have a pawty?

Welcome to the pack kiddo, we're hoppy to have you here 🙂

OH!  What a wonderful story!  Welcome Hero and family!!!  I'm so glad you found each other!  Hero is a cutie pie for sure!

It's strange how people react.  But I know you'll get used to it and it'll not phase you eventually.   I didn't want any pats on the back either when I rescued my Comet who had a deformed front leg.  I felt she was meant for me so I had to get her!

Yes, she needed me but in hindsight I needed her too.  This is something I found out after having her for 12 years and she was gone.  I needed a deformed dog to make me a better person...and she did!

Welcome to our little world!

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Welcome to you and Hero. He is aptly named. It's awesome to be a tripawd pawrent.

It is kind of funny/odd the things people say. I had a guy at the beach (who I saw there all the time) come up and shake my hand once and say he wanted to tell me how much he "admired" me and my dog. I was thinking, "Me? Why did I ever do? She's the amazing one!" But for the most part the people we met were all just very friendly and maybe a little curious. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. I only had a few people say things that annoyed me.

But it's great to have a tripawd that can show people how well they do and be ambassadors.

Keep us posted on how he does,

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. You're right -- who wouldn't fall in love with that face, regardless of how many legs.  Whenever folks told me how awesome I was for doing all I did for my Rio, I'd just tell them that she's the amazing one.  She saved me, not the other way around.

Welcome to the pack!!!

Hi Hero and family - awwww what a great story I love happy endings. You do get used to some of the comments after a while but the worst will always be awww poor doggie. that drives me nuts!!!! but alot of it is just ignorance and before Kaylas amp I guess i may have said something along the same lines too 🙁 opps.  Its not till you have a tripawd that you realise how insignificant missing a leg is to them, the dogs don't care they just carry on as normal.
