Hello all - quick Harley update - whew!  a lot has happened.  Harley was to have gone in for re-check on November 1 but I had to delay that appointment (out of country).  In early October, I noticed a small mass in Harley's mouth - back towards the throat and pretty much knew that it was likely oral melanoma.  An appointment on November 9th with his regular vet - she felt the same seeing the mass had doubled in size in roughly 5 weeks.  As luck would have it, I scored an appointment with his Oncologist the following week where he got his re-check and chest x-rays.  Lungs were all clear with no signs of metastasis.  And as luck would have it again, she was able to get a surgeon to come and take a look at the mass in Harley's mouth and they said they could easily de-bulk it, but would not be able to totally remove the mass due to location and they could do it that day.  I jumped at the opportunity and 6 hours later, I picked Harley up.  He did great under anaesthesia (he has Lar-Par also) and recovered quickly.  But I knew it was just a temporary fix.  Pathology came back as high grade oral melanoma with a high mitotic index.  So, it was going to come back and probably come back with a vengeance.  We decided to do the oral melanoma vaccine and he had his first shot on Dec. 1.  There was no sign of local regrowth of the tumor, however, a week or so later I noticed another small growth close to the original spot.  At his next vaccine appointment on Dec. 15th,  the Oncologist noted that the tumor was regrowing from the scar line of the mass that had been debulked.  Ugh.  That was too quick!  After much discussion where the Oncologist was concerned that the vaccine would not work fast enough to stop the progress of the mass re-growth and thereby be a waste of $$ (I appreciated her concern for my pocketbook) and perhaps starting chemo which could potentially slow down the regrowth (much less expensive also) we decided to do both - the second vaccine and also a treatment of Carboplatin. It's only money right?   Next vaccine is scheduled for Jan. 3rd but we are also looking at radiation as an option.  But where the tumor is located will make it difficult.  At least the re-growth is closer to the last tooth at the back instead of right in the middle of the hard palate where it would eventually affect his eating and breathing.  Sigh, this boy is a cancer magnet.  Otherwise he's doing well.  Still going on a couple of walk/wagon rides every day and manages to get almost a mile in all total.  Still eating well and has good energy.  Still stubborn.  But we know we are on borrowed time so not sure if Radiation will buy him much more time or not, and will it be worth the side-effects (radiation burn) and the cost which is staggering....   Happy Holidays everyone!

First of all CONGRATULATIONS !!  HAPPY ONE YEAR AMPUVERSARY!!👍👏  That is such a remarkable milestone for Harley.  No doubt, the exquisite  care you give him is a factor.

To find out about the mouth tumor is def a kick  in the gut.  We all hate this crap disease so much, especially  when it rears it's cruel  head again.  Goodness knows you are leaving  no stone  unturned.  So far he's had no side effects  from Carboplatin  in the past nor the vaccine, so that's  good. Hear ya'll loud and clear about the radiation  though.  It's always tough to weight quaility  against  quantity  sometimes.  Maybe you can jist see how he reacts to the vaccine and Carboplatin  first.  Dunno.

Wish I had some words of wisdom or medical  insight.   You can search mouth tumors  or oral melanoma.  I know other dogs have experienced it.  Several years ago a sweet dog named Roxy had it I believe.  Not sure what they pursued.

You already know how to Be More Dog and to live fully in the moment.  Continue  to spoil and love jist like you always have.  That's all Harley  cares about.

Still going on a couple of walk/wagon rides every day and manages to get almost a mile in all total.  Still eating well and has good energy

Keep on keeping mon Harley♥️♥️

Yeah - my last Golden Retriever had oral melanoma but his was on the inside of his lip and they were able to remove it and get clean margins.  He lasted another 9 months after diagnosis without any other treatments but that is not what got him.  He ended up with hemangiosarcoma of the heart.  Had an inoperable tumor that was bleeding into the pericardium and causing right side congestive heart failure which in turn caused fluid to build up in his abdomen.  We had the pericardium tapped three times to take pressure off of the heart but after the 3rd time, the cardiologist said that it was the last time because it was getting too painful for him and we had to let him go :'(  In Harley's case, he was given 12 to 18 months from amputation and he's a little over the 12 month mark, so it may not be prudent to spend the $6500 on radiation to buy him more time with the melanoma, only to have lung mets from the osteosarcoma show up within the next few months.  A crystal ball would be nice 🙂

Woah you're right, so much has happened! Yikes! That cancer situation would give any of us whiplash! You did great though, and Harley's oncology team is pretty amazing. You all acted quickly and didn't waste any time making a plan and working it.

And because of everyone working to help him beat this thing, lucky Harley just had an ampuversary and he's cruising into his 11th birthday? YEAH! WHEEEEE! Congrats to all of you! smiley_clap

Oral tumors are so tricky. We have had some members here who have tried electrochemotherapy for these types of cancers. One of them, Codie Rae, got an extra year of a great quality of life after her electrochemo session (just one!). It's a great non-invasive treatment to manage soft tissue tumors. Although it's not widely practiced in the US, it is in other countries, and worth talking to your vet about if you're interested.

I'm so happy you and Harley get to celebrate the pawlidays together! Hope you have a joyful celebration! sp_hearticon2

Interesting that you have mentioned electrochemotherapy .  Our oncologist had mentioned it on Dec. 15th but the nearest facility that offers it is 4 hours away but in a city I know well and we just moved from the National Capital Region.  So I kind of put it in the back of my head.  Then did the radiation consult....but it would require Harley undergoing anaesthesia 4 times and with Lar-Par, that's not really a great idea.  Yep, it may mitigate the cancer but may also lessen his quality of life with the side-effects (radiation burn, possibly losing the fur on the side of his face and potential to affect his vision) and potential larynx damage which could further erode his QOL.  So, then I started to look into the electrochemotherapy and we have a consult scheduled for Wednesday.  The lump seems to be getting smaller though.....   I haven't been able to discuss with the Oncologist since his last visit on Dec. 15th as she has been off so we may delay the electrochemotherapy consult for a week to give us time to discuss a plan with his Onco.  He has an appointment tomorrow for 3rd Melanoma vaccine.  It seems like he had a huge burst of energy for several days  after the 2nd Melanoma vaccine so maybe it is working and kicking up his immune system.

Aounds like a very rational plan to me and  it  keeps Harley's best and quality  interest at heart.

It's wonderful that he has a renewed first of energy AND that the tumor is smaller!  So yeah, ,aybe the vaccine has more benefits that are showing g up in uniqu6 ways for Harley👍  After all, Harley is a unique one of a kind very special boy♥️

Ohhh so where would the electrochemo treatment happen? At your same clinic? I'm thrilled your oncologist mentioned it as an option smiley4 So many do not, even though it's a valid treatment.

Paws crossed that the upbeat energy swing continues! What a good way to start the new year.

So....   sorry for the late response.  Had the electrochemotherapy consult scheduled for January 12th at Hope Advanced Veterinary Center in Vienna, VA - my old stomping grounds so to speak.  But I canceled the appointment.  Why?  Harley's regrowing mass disappeared!  What is that you say?  Yep, he's achieved complete remission!  At Harley's vet appointment with his Oncologist last Tuesday (17th), he got his 4th Oncept vaccine (for malignant oral melanoma) and the Oncologist noted that there is no evidence of any tumor growth in his mouth and the scar tissue where the mass was debulked is now all back to normal.  She firmly believes that it was the chemotherapy that was the catalyst for remission so we are going to do 3 or 4 more Carboplatin treatments just to keep the cancer in remission.  More good news - his chest x-rays were all clear!  So both cancers are in remission and his Lar-Par (GOLPP) is stable.  This dog is defying the odds!!

Wowwww!!! What a miracle dog, thank you for letting us know. I'm thrilled that the tumor went away! 👏

Thanks for letting us know where the appointment was scheduled, I need to start some kind of electrochemotherapy directory.

Hey Everyone, Harley update.  Well, Harley was to have gone in for Chemotherapy on 1/24 but he ended up having to be rushed (on the same day) to the ER instead.  He was fine in the morning - ate his regular breakfast with gusto and then went for his walk.  He seemed to be breathing a bit harder than usual so I limited his distance and had him ride in the wagon more.  We didn't get to go straight home after the walk as I had to pick up my husband at a car dealership where he had dropped his vehicle for servicing.  It was a bit of a hike so probably 1.5 hours longer than usual to get Harley home.  About an hour into the drive, we noted that Harley was shivering and his breathing had gotten shallow and quick.  We thought maybe he was nauseous and would settle once he got home.  But he didn't settle and I took his temperature.  105 degrees.  Yikes!  So, back in the vehicle and pretty much back the direction we had just come from to the ER which is part of the practice where he sees his Oncologist.  We had called ahead and they were waiting for us.  Long story short, he had aspiration pneumonia which had gone septic.  It happened so quickly because he went from being "fine" or at least seemed fine to needing oxygen and IV antibiotics within a 3 hour span.  He spent two nights hospitalized - he probably could have come home after one night but they wanted to err on the side of caution (and of course run up the vet bill smiley7)  His white blood cell count was extremely low.  What likely happened was that when he aspirated whatever it was (there was a bit of vomit with a green bean in it on the floor by where he had been laying overnight), the neutrophils which were already depleted from the chemo, rushed to the lungs to fight the infection and left a void of WBC in the rest of the body.  Very scary.  Happy to report that he has almost fully recovered and has since had another chemo treatment.  The tumor looked like it had started to regrow so the Oncologist gave the go ahead for the next chemo treatment because his WBC count was right in the middle of the normal range.  He is still on oral antibiotics for the pneumonia - his lungs were not totally clear and if they remain the same the next time he gets chest x-rays, then it's likely scarring from the pneumonia, but it will make it more difficult to note any lung metastasis.

OMD!!  I was holding my breath hoping for the best.  Had to skip sonte t and scroll down u til I could find out he was okay!  Whew!  Soooo scary!!!!

Crazy, absolutely  crazy how quickly things went downhill.  Thank goodness you acted promptly  and were able to get him assessed  quickly and on to the solution.

I know you are exhausted  mentally and physically.  When you can rhough, please update us in the next couple of days and let us know how Harley's doing,  Hopefully  there will be no side effects from the chemo and hopefully  the antibiotics  can knock out the pneumonia quickly.

Just so thankful  you got on top of this quickly.   Good job!!!

Hugs
