It's been a year.  Three-hundred-sixty-six days (leap year) since our beloved Cali followed her snowy trails to the other side.  It has been a year of reflection, sadness, joy, and adventure.  I still feel Cali with us at times.  I still see her hopping around the corners of the yard, visiting with her pack, helping others find the trails they need to follow.

Our decision to amputate a limb on our 12-yr old lead dog was a difficult one.  The Tripawds website was so helpful.  We never second-guessed our decision, and our Cali lived another 3 happy, pain-free years.  She went to Alaska and ran the trails her ancestors ran.  She went hiking.  She met all sorts of school kids, and taught them that "different" was cool.  She laid in the sunshine and romped in the snow.  She met Jerry!  We would never trade those experiences of her last years.

I wanted to thank the Tripawds community, espeicially Rene, Jim, Wyatt, and Spirit Jerry, for their strength and continued support and education for those facing similar decisions as we faced.  This group is full of amazing, fantastic people and dogs who love them.  I hope each of you has a wonderful Cali Day and celebrate the NOW.

Peace and kisses-

TC and Spirit Cali

How beautiful 🙂  What a nice way to celebrate her life, in reflection.

Peace and kisses back!

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Happy Calpurnia Day indeed! It is a fine day to honor such a special gal.

How odd that the musher road trip song you sent to us, "Staring at the A$$h0les of my 12 Favorite Dogs" came on the iPod today, when it hasn't for a very long time. We smile whenever we hear it. Cali was sending us a little sign on her day.

No need to thank us TC, it's the stories like Cali's that make Tripawds special. You have contributed greatly to helping others  by sharing her experiences as a senior tripawd, so it's we who owe you the thanks. Meeting you and the Odaroloc Pack was not only one of the highlights of our time with Jerry as a pack, but has enlightened us about the incredible nature of musher dogs, and made our lives richer just by knowing you, Dave and the pups.

Cheers to Cali, queen of the trail. May she always run with the wind, with Jerry by her side.

Really love that video! Really love Calpurnia (truly an inspiration!) Really gotta look up that musher road trip song.....

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us.

The song Jerry is referring to is called The Mushing Song by Joe Bishop.  You can here it here: http://www.rapi.....ushing.mp3  (It is a silly song - a testiment to where your mind goes after days on the runners in cold temperatures with your dogs.)

Meanwhile, the Odaroloc Pack is playing dog games in the cool of the morning before the heat of the day.

Oh oh thank you TC! I don't have the title because when we transferred your CD you sent us over to our iPod the titles didn't show up. Glad to know who the artist is!

I agree with Jerry in that we are all thankful that you shared Calpurnia's story and continue to be a part of this community.  I hope you know how much it means to us that are new(er) to the site to read such inspirational stories and know that it is, indeed, possible for a dog to beat the odds.  Happy Cali day to you!

Lisa

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

It's hard to believe it's been a year. We will celebrate this day for Calpurnia and not be sad....because I know our dogs would want us to be happy!
