Belated welcome from the Trouble girl. As I read through all the great advice, I didn't see a couple of the small items I normally mention. the first is you won't feel the relief of having made the decision to amputate until the the day you pick Riley up from the hospital and he comes bounding out ready for the trip home. That was the moment I knew I had no regrets. And by all means when he gets home, rest when he rests. You will have a tendency to want to sit and watch him sleep. Don't do it! When he sleeps, you sleep. It is very stressful on the humans the first two weeks and you will make it much easier the quicker you learn to rest.

Welcome Riley!
You are lucky to have found this site before surgery; in Rusty's case things were happening so fast between the diagnosis and surgery, that it was after surgery before we discovered Tripawds. We were flying blind for the first few days, and unsure of what we had done and where we were going. As everyone has said the first two weeks are pure hell, but we have no regrets on the decision to amputate. Rusty will reach his 12 month Ampuversary on Tuesday (Yeah!) and if we had not performed the amputation and Chemotherapy Rusty would not have survived more than 30 days.

Rusty is a Labradoodle who was diagnosed with level 3 Fibrosarcoma on January 16th, 2010 and had his left hind leg amputated on January 25th, 2010 five days before his 18 month birthday. Please see Rusty's blog @rusty.tripawds.com. He is putting up one heck of a fight against this terrible disease.
Riley:
You have received many suggested excellent readings to help you prepare for surgery; if you want to read one more about Rusty it is almost a daily diary of the first two weeks after surgery rusty.tripawds.com
