Thanks for all of the replies. He had his amputation surgery on Tuesday, and he came home today in the afternoon. He is getting around OK, but still needs a good bit of assistance with the sling. We are managing, but he still has yet to pee on his own and that has me concerned. So around 7pm we headed back to the VRC and had his bladder drained via catheter. They had to sedate him because he is a bit tender in that whole area as would be expected, and he was not tolerant of the catheter without it. He allows me to apply the iced towel in a plastic bag to his leg area to help with the swelling, so he is certainly trusting me somewhat. He apparently ate well at the vet, and he had a bunch of chicken breast here at home and some water. I've started a 'medication log' for him to keep track of the timing of what he is getting and when.
I will try to get him to pee again in the morning and see if we have any better luck. He never was a fan of peeing on a leash, and most of his favorite spots are up in the woods where he is not allowed right now. So, hopefully tomorrow he picks a new spot in the small yard and we don't have to make a trip back to the vet tomorrow again.
One other note. I bought him a really nice dog bed called "Big Barker". It was not cheap, and i was hesitant but it has proved to be a good investment so far as he went straight to it upon getting home. It has quality memory foams that provide him good support and stability. I figured i already dropped a many thousands on surgery.. what was another few hundred on a dog bed.
I am extremely exhausted both physically and mentally. I'll provide another update tomorrow, hopefully with a better day.
Thanks again for all the support and a place to brain dump about everything.
Nate
Welcome home Diesel! Take it. nice and slow sweet boy!
As far as not peeing, that does happen on occasion. If you can, try and let him pee without the leash or sling. Thr hospital meds should be wearing off by tomorrow so he may be more aware of the fact that he needs to pee! I know he wants ro go to his favorite spots, but that sounds too far away for now. Perhaps you could actually digg up some dirt and some brush from where he usually likes tonpee and drop it in the yard. The things we do for our dogs!!
Glad you're keeping track of all his meds. Sometimes they take a little adjustment depending on how Diesel's pain is being managed.
I'm sure you are so exhausted! I don't think I slept ore than five hiurs total for the first three nignts! My Happy Hannah was auite restless and uncomfortable for several days.
Oh, and if Diesel doesn't poop for a few days, no worries. Obviously, the pee is a different ..matter!
BTW. I am HUGE fan of The Big Barker Bed !! I now own three! And yes, a true investment, but I've spent that many times over on "squishy" beds that lose shape, get flat, etc..My first Big Barker Bed is now over three years and has not lost it's firmness one bit! My Happy Hannah, a 125 lb Bull Mastiff recovered very nicely on that bed. She was never able to go back up the stairs to sleep with me. I brought a second Big Barker Bed and placed it next to hers and we were able to sleep sixe by side until I was able to afford a floor mattress. I preferred it to the mattress!!
Update us a soon as you can tomorrow. Stay connected. Recovery can be full of ups and downs the furst week or two.
Hugs to all!

Ohhh what a long day for both of you. Glad he made it through surgery though. Sounds like you're really on top of things with his urination reluctance. I've been told that if a dog won't pee within 12 hours then yes definitely go back.
What a lucky boy to get a Big Barker! It's one of our top choices in the Tripawds Gear Blog bed page. Bet you were tempted to sleep on it too right?!

Thanks for the words of encouragement and feedback. We made some good progress today. Diesel was able to move about better and is starting to get a little better with his balance. I took him back down to the vet today anticipating him needing a catheter, but he decided to pee on his own once we got out of the car at the vet. I'll take it. He has yet to poop, and i think he is a little worked up over it right now. He is a bit restless right now.. to the point that this post has take an hour to complete.
More tomorrow.
Nate
He has been very restless all evening. I've been trying to get to a 5 minute shower for going on four hours. I think he wants to go outside to shit, but the three trips outside tonight have been just wandering the yard. His favorite shitting spot is in the woods, so i am kind of screwed since he cant go up there.
I am sooooo mentally, physically, emotionally, financially, and everything else drained.

Hi Nate,
Hang in there- it gets better.
He may be restless because of the pain meds- tramadol made my pug Maggie very agitated and she wouldn't sleep. The pain meds will also cause constipation. Sometimes some plain pumpkin will get things moving. Mag didn't poop until day 5 or 6, maybe 7 I don't remember. Ever since I met her when she was 8 weeks old she had to spin before she could poop. The first days after her amp (rear amp) she would try and spin and fall down and she would glare at me...if looks could kill! She did figure out her balance and was able to spin and to poop!
Great idea to keep a log- also record his restless times and see if there is a correlation to the pain med schedule. Keep talking to your vet about how Diesel is acting- sometimes a small tweak in the pain meds can make a big difference.
You are in the worst of the recovery now- you will get through.

Ditto Karen!
This may be more pain related than poop related...or pain meds related! Too many choices!
How much does Diesel weigh? What pain meds is he on and how often and dose?
I'm assuming he's peed again since this morning?
Being sleep deprived .akes everything seem overwhelming! You've been on a very stressful and intense journey for a couple of weeks. Its hard right now to envision things getting better, but they do!! It took me about three weeks before zi coukd say I didnthis FOR my Happy Hannah and notnTO her! Hopefully you'll be saying that even sooner!
We'll look forward to your next update.
Hugs!

The Big Barker bed is worth the investment. We also have three. I bought the oldest several years ago when Otis was diagnosed with mild arthritis.
Some dogs don't like to poop while being watched. I took Otis out in the yard on the lead, took the lead off, and he hoped behind a bush where I couldn't "see" him. When he was done, I put the lead back on and we went inside.
Hope he continues to improve - you will be amazed at how much better most of them do once the staples come out. Just hold on until then!
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Shortly after my post last night, he fell asleep and slept for a solid ten hours. I feel much better rested as well after logging an equal amount of sleep. I found a small nugget of poo on the carpet next to his bed this morning. I think he farted last night and blew a chunk.. lol, whatever.. however he wants to get it out of his system. I took him outside around 11am this morning and he FINALLY took a giant crap on a small pile of leaves. He hopped around a bit on his own pretty well and also stood most of the time. He was up for a while, and now just fell back asleep again on his Big Barker. I am happy with the progress he has made over the last day with just the peeing and pooping on his own.

Thanks Everyone. In answer to some earlier questions from Sally, Diesel was 94 pounds prior to surgery. He appears to have lost some weight aside from the amputation, but his appetite still isn't great. He drinks a little water here and there, but not a ton.. and the last time he pee'd was yesterday around 5pm. He hasn't gone since.. so he is going on 22 hours without peeing. We've only been outside once today when he pooped, and he did not pee then. As far as medication, he is on:
200 mg of tramadol every 8 -12 hours as needed.
150 mg of trazadone every 8-12 hours as needed.
100 mg of rimadyl every 12 hours.
40 mg of pepcid once per day. (usually around 8pm)
I stuck closer to the 8 hours on the pain and sedation for the first two days, but I am closer to 10 hours now based off of him sleeping more. He just didn't want to fuss with medicine at 6am this morning, so he had it at 8 am when we was a little more alert. I'll probably try to stick to he 10 hour cycle and see how that works for him.
As always, thanks for the words of encouragement. I still haven't gotten around to trying to host a picture of him anywhere and link it.. i will try to figure that out over the weekend.

Just back from another trip to the vet. Diesel hadn't gone pee in about 26 hours despite having a good bit of water today and wandering the back yard as if he wanted to. So, I headed back to the vet around 8pm fully knowing they were closed but anticipating the 15 minute ride and those smells of other dogs would do the trick. Sure enough... 5 minutes of wandering their yard and he drained his bladder.
I may be getting played for car rides at this point.
Nate
Brilliant idea to drive back to the vets office. Sounds like smells are really important to the process for him. Hopefully, once the staples come out, he can go back out in the woods again.

Well that's great! Glad he's feeling relieved.
