Thank you Hattie!

We got our sling in today and unfortunately it was not very helpful getting up or down the stairs. Does anyone have a large dog that they are moving up and down stairs and could possibly suggest a harness for a dog that will be a rear amputee??? Thanks guys!

Although Murphy was only about 70 pounds post-amp, we really loved our Ruffwear Webmaster harness . Murphy even learned to lift his front paw to help us put it on him. I used to have a video of it, but I guess it got lost in the great YouTube shuffle.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

We used the RuffWear harness by webmaster for our rear legged 110 # German Sheperd Max and found it worked wonderfully for him.  We started using it just a few days out after surgery (didn't have one until then).  The straps didn't come near his incision so we mostly left it on him all day and would take it off at night along with a gentle all over body massage.  He never minded wearing it and with the handle on the top we were able to offer much assistance to him when needed.  We ordered it from the store/ gear here on the site.  I believe since then they have an even more deluxe padded one I think it's Otis that has one maybe she'll pop in here and let you know about that one.  Hope this helps and do keep us posted on the beautiful Dior.

Yes, we have the Ruffwear Webmaster harness - it has a padded brush guard on the chest.  Otis is a front leg amputee, about 100 pounds.  I love that I can use the handle to help lift him without feeling like any straps are cutting into his body (and without having to exert much pressure myself).  We mostly use it for walks.  He likes it, even rolls in it.  I attach the lead to the harness directly.  It keeps the lead away from his feet and allows me to exert gentle control without worrying about unbalancing him.  I'm a fan.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Hello all,

Dior is scheduled for amputation today and we are nervous yet relieved. We entered the study at UPENN for dogs with OSTEO and have had a great experience thus far. I have read several stories on the blog about various experiences Post Amp. and wanted to see if anyone has advice or some things that they did to help their fur baby. We have been giving her daily massages but that is about all we know to do as of now... Any suggestions helps and is greatly appreciated.

Sending positive thoughts for an easy and successful surgery.

Remember that the recovery period can be difficult (mostly for the humans!) so keep a positive attitude and don't get discouraged. I think that was one of the biggest mistakes I made during my pug Maggie's recovery.  She was such a slug that I was sure I had done the wrong thing by choosing surgery.  You tend not to sleep much and it is an emotionally draining time- it's easy to start second guessing yourself.

Keep yourself busy today update us when you can.
