Hello

Our beautiful German Shepard  was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on the 21st and underwent left front leg, scapula and lymph nodes amputation on the 26th.  We are 5 days post op and our boy is getting stronger each day.  Uncertain what the future holds for Bubba. What we do know, we will do everything we can to make sure his life is happy and full of love.

See, our son is a Marine Veteran and Bubba is his service dog.  His life has been dedicated in providing a special service to our son who suffered from seizues.  The bond they share will forever be shared.

Hello and welcome to you Bubba and a Semper Fi to your son!

I'm sorry cancer has brought you here although it is good to hear that Bubba is doing well post-op.

What we do know, we will do everything we can to make sure his life is happy and full of love.

Around here we call that attitude 'being more dog'.  Good job! That will get you a long way in this cancer journey.

We have lots of resources here like The Reading List that can help you navigate your new normal with Bubba.  The best resource is your new family here- we have been where you are and can help.

Thank you. Today is another good day for Bubba.   He sure has adapted very well to life with three legs.  He has exceeded our expectations so far.  We are 6 days out post op.  He has a community of supporters praying for him.

Thank you.  Bubba continues to bounce back each day.   Yesterday was tough as he didn't drink much and just seemed off.  We remind ourselves that his medications are causing him to act this way.  As long as we keep our spirits up he does too.  He is so much more alert and even goes to the door when he needs to go out.  He was always a very social boy and through all this and through the pain he still is very social.   We're following his cues and just doing our best to treat him as if nothing has changed.  He rests when he needs to otherwise he is awake and walks around to visit each of us or our other dog.  We keep him confinded to the lower level and take turns sleeping down there with him.  He's never left alone and he is loving every minute of it.  Realistically we know he has a long road ahead of him and there are no guarantees.  We're all just going to cherish the time we have and make his life the happiest we can.

You have the PERFECT attitude and it sounds as though Bubba is doing really well. The odd off day is to be expected. There's the meds of course, and perhaps he was just tired from the day before. His whole body is adapting to the altered gait. All the muscles and so on take time to adjust, so if he's a little bit livelier one day, it's unsurprising if he is quieter the next. I think you are exactly right to take your cues from him. You are clearly so sensitive to his needs. Ditto the pic request, please....

Thank you.  He gets his drain tube out today.  He had another really good day yesterday.   He actually wanted to play with one of his ropes.

I'm still trying to figure out how to add pictures to this forum.  I'm typically computer literate but for some reason I cannot figure this out.  I he some really great photos of him.   UgH...

Bubba is beautiful!  So happy to hear he's doing so well!  You have such a great attitude....you're doing so well at being more dog and taking one day at a time!  This journey and our dogs teach us many life lessons that serve us well going forward.  You go handsome Bubba!  Hugs to you both!

Great news.... Bubba had his drain tube removed this morning and he handled it like a trooper.  He greeted everyone at the vet in true Bubba fashion, tail wagging and lots of kisses and even jumped up on the tech to say hello.  We are so fortunate to have such an amazing care team at our vet office.  Dr. Cole, our vet, is just so amazed at his recovery progress.  Except for the new walk/hope, you would never know had had major surgery.  Staples come out next Wednesday and we can retire the cone.  He sure has a strong will to live... We're just going to continue to embrace these good days because there are no guarantees...

Picture attached shows how happy he was to be at the vet office and this was after he had the drain tube removed.

YESSSS! You've got it down and I have no doubt that you and Bubba are going to keep on kickin' butt! Really happy to hear he's on the way to a great life on three legs.

Bubba looks SO happy in that photo! What a gorgeous boy.
