Great news again!
Bean is home! He was doing so well that the vet decided that he could come home today, rather than tomorrow. Now, this has it's good and bad sides: it's great that he's home with us, but now we have to figure out how to best care for him.
He's on a fentanyl patch at the moment, but that comes off tomorrow morning. We're thinking that that's probably a good thing, as his eyes are the size of dinner plates and he's doing the typical "hound" noises because he's so confused. He's resting at the moment, which was our main concern (he tried to run down the hallway when we got home, which is what he does every time, but we told him no). Other than that he seems really healthy.
What side-effects do the fentanyl patch cause? I'm glad that he's coming off it tomorrow morning, we're going to leave it on to allow him to sleep tonight, but I'm curious as to how quickly he'll get back to his normal self after the patch comes off.
The wound isn't NEARLY as bad as I had expected, Dr. Matt did a fantastic job of closing the suture site. It was still a shock to see Bean with only three legs! Even though his fourth leg always looked strange and awkward, it was still a fourth leg. Even though I knew that the surgery had been performed, when I first saw him I thought my brain was playing tricks on me.
I feel anxious and relieved at the same time: he is now in our care, and we're responsible for him and his happiness and health, but on the other hand, the hard part is over and now he can go on to live his life.
Thank you so much, everybody, for all of your help, advice, support, and kind and thoughtful words. They have really helped us get through this rough time.

Great news indeed- I am so glad Bean is home- I 'm sure he is too. Wrigley was still on Tramadol after the patch came off so it is difficult to say how long until the are back to their old self once the patch comes off. I know once she was off the patch, then the tramadol, she was almost immediately back to her old self.
It is a shock the first time you see them with 3 legs, even still after 2 months sometimes I do a double take , but for the most part you hardly remember them with 4. It's amazing too how many people do notice and how many people don't even notice she only has 3 legs when we go out walking.
The hard part is over, and you will soon be over the recovery and life as a tripawd will be great.
Thanks for the good news- keep it up Bean- we're proud of you!

Yeaaaay! Congratulations Bean! We are so hoppy you made it through with flying colors.
Yeah, those patches can make you see pink elephants. Once it's out of your system though, you'll be fine!
It took a long time for my pawrents to get used to seeing me with only three legs. But personally, I couldn't give a hoot! I was just happy to be loving life again.
Good luck with the recovery. We aren't worried about you at all, we know you'll do just fine! Thanks for letting us know how you're doing.

Woohoo Budy Bean! You sure are cute--where do you live? Its great to hear you are home and busy healing up. Take it easy for a few days, OK? Don't scare your mom too much! And BTW Bean's mom...you are awesome for jumping in at the deep end and taking the Tripawd Challenge. Bean is one lucky pup!
Love and kisses,

Hey guys, thank you all once again for your enormous amount of support. I've been very sick lately, and far far far too tired to be able to post here, but today I feel a bit better, so I thought I would post with an update!
Beaner went to the vet today for a check-up, and we got the all clear! He goes in next Wednesday to get his staples out!
On a side note: thank you Jerry! I was worried that it was just him seeing those pink elephants! Once the patch came off, he felt muuuuch better, and he was back to being a great big cuddle monster!
Codie Rae: We live in Southern Ontario, Canada! And thank you, but it was too hard to resist such a perfect face and character! You make us sound like angels, but really all we saw was a sweet, well behaved, well socialized dog who just needed a chance!
Zeus: please send us authographed portraits of yourself!
Thank you to EVERYBODY for all of your support and infinite kindness and advice!

ooooh, sorry you've got a nasty bug! As if you needed one more thing to deal with. Feel better soon OK?
Sooooo glad Bean is on the road to wellness, that is RAD! Thanks for the update. Send photos when you can.
P.S. We love Ontario. My grandparents met and married in Oakville, Toronto. Neat place! I got to swim in the lake there, it was one of the highlights of my road trip.

Tell your Mom that we're glad to hear that she is feeling better...and my silly mom needs to load that picture yet to you. I will make certain she does that this week.
Lots of love to you pal! When you have a minute, post a pic of your new self!
