Nervousness is on a whole new level now: Bean's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning and my stomach is in knots!

My sister is studying to be a vet tech, however, and she will be sitting in on his surgery, so that makes us feel a bit more comfortable with it.  We've also raised all the money we needed to pay for his surgery, so we can relax about that too!

My parents bought Beaner a life jacket so that he can go swimming in the ocean this summer, which I'm sure he's very excited about.  We took him swimming on Sunday, one last time before his surgery.  Actually, swimming is a bit of an overstatement, we believe he's never been before because he took two hops into the water and fell flat on his face!  We think that he'll need a bit of help getting accustomed to it once he's fully healed and the warmer weather hits, but he seems very excited about going in the water.

I'm in the process of knitting Bean a one-legged sweater, and my other half and I are making a t-shirt tonight that says "It's just a flesh wound!" (c/o Monty Python's Black Knight).  We were going to make one that said "It's just a flesh wound! Come back here and I'll bite your legs off!", but we decided against it because some people seem to be afraid of him already.  Can you imagine being afraid of that face?  Silly people!

Bean is going to be spoiled silly tonight before we have to stop feeding him in preparation of his surgery tomorrow: we're bringing him to Ren's (our local pet depot) so that all the people that work there can give him pats and treats and well wishes for tomorrow.

We know that he's in good hands, but it's still nerve wracking! He's just such a goof, and the last thing we want is for anything bad to happen to him.

We're happy in the knowledge that this is the best thing for him, and that he will be SO much happier without the leg in his way!  My sister says to think of the leg as a tumor: it really truly needs to come off.  It's so hard not to count down the hours left until our boy goes into surgery.

Thank you so much to everybody for all of your kind words of support, they truly help.

It's OK to be nervous ... just don't show it to Bean! Remember to be a strong pack leader, and Bean will do well. Here's to a perfect procedure and speedy full recovery. Thanks for checking in. We look forward to hearing about Bean's progress.

Great news!

Bean is out of surgery and doing well!  It took a bit longer than expected, and he bled a bit more than expected, but he's doing great!  We can call as often as we'd like to check on him, so that's a relief as well.  When he was coming out of sedation, he saw my sister, so he started spazzing about like a goofball, so they had to re-sedate him until she left, but other than that the surgery went smoothly.  Dr. Matt weighed the leg, and apparently it was only 1.1 kg because it was so atrophied! Poor guy.

We'll keep you posted with how his recovery goes!  Thank you again for all of your support!

He's a lovely dog, best wishes for his recovery!

I forgot to ask the vet what Cooper's leg weighed. His weight after surgery was only about 1lb less...but I brought him in with an empty stomach and a little dehydrated, and they released him all full of fluid. No way would even an atrophied Rottweiler leg only weigh one pound. (It's a grisly thought, but I couldn't help wondering!)

Oh not grisly at all! My Mom often wondered that too. They didn't even think to ask what happened to my leg after the surgery. Some pawrents have the leg cremated and hang onto it so that someday their tripawd can be all together. That hadn't even occurred to my Mom and Dad.

Hiya Beaner...we just wanted to chime in and say how HOPPY we are that you made it through surgery (like we had ANY doubt!!!) When do you get to go home pal?

Remember to take it easy...rest and don't push too much for 2 weeks. I know you like your reputation of being a goof-ball and I'm sure it's well deserved, but you'll have to lay low and let it slide for a few weeks...then you can pick it right back up 🙂

How is Mom and her better half holding up? I bet everyone is glad the surgery is over...make sure you tell her to get some rest over the next few weeks - it's VERY important that our humans rest too, they function much better and cope with things easier when they are rested. Trust me, when Mom is tired, MAN is she CRANKY!!! (but don't tell her I said that).

Give us a shout when you have a free paw and let us know how you're feeling. We're thinking about you!

Tripawds Forever!

I've had many thoughts about Marley's leg too. 🙁  I never thought that would be an option to have it cremated...

when I get sad about it I try to just think of how much pain it caused her, but it was still a part of her for 12 1/2 years... sniff sniff.
