Do you have any recommended discussions about dogs with the "opposite" of diabetes, hypoglycemia? That is what Jewels has. Right now I am still seriously thinking about amputation as a possibility. I just think our regular vet is not comfortable performing the surgery, but will recommend a good surgeon if that is what we still decide to do.
Jewels was a gorgeous Lab-Shep mix that found us at the pet rescue when she was just 3 months old. Born June 2000; Diagnosed OSA on June 1, 2011; L-front Amputation September 12, 2011; Crossed Rainbow Bridge December 30, 2011. My "baby dog" will always be in my heart. Now she is running fast and free on all four legs after the rabbits and squirrels! Jewels was loved by her crazy-busy mom, even-keeled dad, pesky twin human brothers and monkeydog sister Aspen. Geez I dug around here and so far we haven't had anypawdy with this condition prepare for surgery. I also looked online and couldn't find much either.
I forget, are you near a veterinary teaching hospital? They have so many specialists and folks who know about conditions like this, I would look into it if you are near one. Otherwise I would definitely go with a specialist surgeon and get another opinion.

Hello everyone! We are back now after a two month absence. We had decided for a while to manage the pain as much as we can. But in recent weeks we noticed, as expected that Jewels seemed to be in more pain. Her tumor was "stable" for a while growing ever so slowly, but in recent weeks it started to get larger and lumpier. We are now financially in a position to have a surgeon specialist (very expensive) do the amputation. We know it is time to do something more for Jewels so that she would no longer suffer. Her blood sugar levels checked out normal this time! So we are cleared for surgery. I took her in this morning for the surgery and will find out in a few hours how it went. Now we've just got to prepare ourselves emotionally for her homecoming. Jerry's pack, I'd thought you'd like to know that we see Dr. Kelly of Santa Fe as our Oncologist. I believe Jerry was one of her patients? She is awesome!

Ohh it's great to hear from you! We're sorry that it's come down to surgery but rest assured you are in the best pawsible care.
Yes, got that right, Dr. Kelly and her crew treated me and they are GREAT! At the time I was directly under the care of Dr. Marie Mullins (now in Colorado, another great onco vet!), who was with Dr. Kelly's team at the time. It's Kelly's clinic's pawesome care and protcols that helped me beat the odds longer than anyone thought pawsible.
If you remember, please tell her we said hello, we hope to see her again soon and do some new interviews with her to find out what's new in oncology. Maybe we can meet up with you and Jewel too?
Good luck today, we are thinking of you both and sending lots of pawsitive thoughts your way!

Thanks Jerry! Just got off the phone with the surgeon and everything went smoothly with the surgery. Yes, I will be sure to let Dr. Kelly know you send your regards. And yes, would love to meet with you if you ever get around to New Mexico to interview Dr. Kelly (we are in Albuquerque).
I love this website and the support that it provides! It's such a wonderful resource for families like ours with tripawds. I appreciate it!!!

I am so very happy to report that my Jewels is doing awesome! It's been over two weeks since surgery and now that she is recovering very nicely, I see now that she is now feeling great and pain free!!! It was definitely the right decision. The first week or so were hard for me, staying up at night with her worrying about how she is doing and watching her to make sure she doesn't do anything crazy to injure herself while still healing from surgery. I am amazed at how her pain is gone. She is definitely happier and back to her old self. Now I will go ahead and take advantage of all your great suggestions for providing her with a great diet so that she can live the rest of her life happy and as healthy as possible. She is adapting well. At first she would get very tired hopping around, but now she is building strength in her remaining front paw and can get around pretty good now. Even slowly but surely she can get in and out of the dog door on her own!
I look forward to becoming an involved member in this great tripawd community. Thanks so much for all your support, words of encouragement and great advice!

She looks like such a sweet pea! Glad to hear you are over that tough two-week post-amp hump and that she is doing well!
All the best,
Jackie, Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Yay Jewel!! Sounds like you're doing pawsome!! I'm not sure where you live, but Bo enjoyed swimming...even as a tripawd! We got him a spunky float coat (even though he didn't think he needed one) and it made us feel more comfortable letting him swim. It really helped stretch and strengthen muscles, and helped him exert some energy too. Keep us posted!!

Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
My tripawd best friend is an almost 10 year old Rottweiler Dutch. He LOVES to swim and fish, and he has been my companion through the best and worst days of my life from the age of 21 to 31. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma 3 weeks ago. He had is right rear leg amputated, due to a spiral fracture of his distal tibia. No known metasteses are occurring as of this post. I am a Naturopathic Physician, and have decided not to treat with chemotherapy. I have him on homeopathic remedies, supplements/vitamins, and herbs (including chinese herbs, artemisinin , and mushrooms). I can't knowingly give my dog chemicals that would lower his vital force, and I believe in the healing power of nature. Even if chemo gained him a few more months, it's not worth the risk of side effects, the cost, or the fact that he has told me himself it's not what he wants. I am so grateful to have had even a day's worth of love from this amazing dog. He is truly a gift, and touches so many lives. Every additional day I have with him from here on out is a blessing. I am so glad to have found others who decided to forego the chemotherapy route. If Dutch makes it as long as I am hoping he does, I would love to share with you all the research I have done, and the protocol he is on. Oh, he is also on an anti-cancer diet that I can share as well. Good luck to you all, and all of your 1,2,3, or 4 legged best friends.
