Sheba's home! Mostly sleeping, but she was very pissed to discover she can't itch her right ear anymore. Good thing she has attentive humans!

Sheba is beautiful! How great that it's not cancer Now that she's home, it's on to recovery. Make sure you keep up on her medications - since she's had surgery before, you know how important it is to give them around the clock. You can put an ice pack on for about 20 minutes at a time a couple times a day, with a cloth to protect her skin. Murphy didn't really eat very well while he was recovering, so I cooked up some rice, poured chicken broth over it then added some chunks of chicken to it.

Donna,
in the past our mEd schedule was only 3 meds. Now it's 5! 6 if the vet adds trazodone back into the mix. Some meds restart with dinner tonight, others not til tomorrow. Sheba's drug resistant so the overnight vet kept calling our surgeon to make sure the sedative doses weren't going to kill Sheba. The surgeon decided it'd be better for all if Sheba just came home to our experienced medical care.
She just refused food. Including her favorite canned food and boiled chicken (we tried kibble first). It took a lot of convincing and a dab of peanut butter to get the meds down. Then she snorted on me and turned into the corner facing away from me. It's going to be a long night!

Donna - I just love Sheba she's such a hoot in how you describe her. Rufio's sister is a min pin named Sheba too and she is a sassy one! So glad to hear she's home to you guys and I hope she continues to eat - it's the saddest when a food driven dog refuses food. Keep updating, really encouraging stuff to read as my boy is just coming off his anesthesia at the hospital.

Ohhhh Sheba! It's so nice to see your pretty face!
I'm glad you're doing well. Hopefully you won't need another fentanyl patch, most dogs don't once the original one has worn off. As for not poopin' yet, I hope today's the day. Tell your people to try adding olive oil, bran flakes or dollops of steamed squash or pumpkin pulp to your food, it really does help.

We've been giving Sheba 2tbsp of canned pumpkin with every meal, but olive oil sounds worth a try. I'm not sure if we have bran flakes.
This is actually Sheba's 3rd consecutive fentanyl patch, she built up a tolerance to the tramadol so it takes more pills more frequently to control the pain. We're hoping to be off everything but the gabapentin by the time the stitches come out. But for now we're being heavy handed on the pain meds.

She finally pooped yesterday!!
was like cowpies (but smaller, thank dog!) but doc says that's fine considering how much pumpkin she's been getting.
Got a new fentanyl patch, doc thinks the incision looks great. Histopathology report on the amputated tissues came back definitively NOT cancer, YES infectious, probably fungal. Still waiting on fungal ID and susceptibility.

That is FANTASTIC news!!!!
As I mentioned earlier, Sheba is less than a half-dozen dogs in all our years of existence (since 2006) that has ever reported back with a fungal infection. YAY!
(It's crazy what we celebrate around here isn't it?)
P.S. Mind if I put your great incision photo in our gallery?

Jerry, you're more than welcome to put the incision photo up in the gallery!
Sheba slept on it last night for the first time so it must be feeling better
