Good to hear that Sammy is doing better! How lucky you are to have Dr. Pam as your vet!
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
I am lucky for Sammy that Dr. Pam is treating him I agree, thank goodness we are in the same geographical location and Dr. Pam said yes! We cut back on the Tramadol and the Gabapentin is working fine. Sammy is doing great, no more pain, eating well and functioning fabulously. He can even go down the slope to his old "potty" grounds. Yea!
He seems pretty proud of himself. I can't believe it is only 8 days since his amp and he is movin' and groovin'. It rained all day yesterday so when I got him outside for his "constitutional" he came running back to me. His first run. I tried slowing him down but he wanted inside in a hurry. Seems my Northwestern boy has gotten a little spoiled but it is okay with me.
I hope you all have a great day too, no matter what kind of work day is in store for me I know I already have,

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
Hi Elizabeth,
Sounds like Sammy is doing great and life is getting back to normal- or at least the new normal!
I have kept an eye on Sammy's recovery. Before I was consumed by pugs I had a newfie mix that looked a lot like Sammy. I never knew what the mix was, I found him when he was a puppy and no one claimed him. He had all the newfie looks, but was taller and not as stocky as most of the newfies I have seen. But what is with Sammy not liking rain? I couldn't keep my Bo-dog out of any water!
Keep up the good work. And all your trials are not in vain- your story will help the next person who has trouble with phantom pain and gets off to a rough start on recovery. You guys know that it does get better!

I'm coming into this conversation late, but it's something I'm confused about. I personally have been on Gabapentin for 10 years...the result of nerve tingling in my fingers & toes from chemo and radiation. I've never had any side effects. But it has to be taken over a period of days to work...it doesn't just kick in like a pain pill.
Does it work differently with dogs?

I am just now catching up with Sammy's recovery. I'm so glad that he is doing so much better. This recovery time can be so difficult. I remember once we took Mackenzie off tramadol, she made a complete turnaround. It's amazing how these pain meds affect dogs differently - and people for that matter. Hope Sammy continues to improve like this - before you know it, he'll be taking you for walks! Keeping our paws crossed for Sammy!
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
Goodmoring everyone,
krun15, that is exactly Sammy's situation. I found him when the person in front of me tossed him from the car. I live out in the country so we have lots of dogs "set free". He was about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 months old the vet thought. He has webbed paws like a newfie with the coat that is like a newfie, but is taller and leaner. I would guess part lab too maybe?
Ruthiegirl, Sammy took it (3 pills a day) the first day, with the symptoms still around, the second day they were medium to small episodes just more of them, and the 3rd day he would just occasionally whine. So much better than the howling that was what was happening in the beginning. Now he is much happier. Dr. Pam said it is best to start it from the beginning but she wasn't Sammy's Dr. at the time.
kbryant, I am hoping for that too! thanks for the paws crossed 🙂
Now I just got a v/m that said "evidence of lymph invasion".
