JD's mom,
Thanks for the support and the comfort. Gabipentin-Gaboplentin, I don't know. I am so new to all of this stuff I feel like I am just sputtering out words and hoping someone will recognize what I am trying to say.
Jerry's pack, as always thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Krispikritter, I have read that. He is on Rymidil and tramodol. I don't know how it is affecting him other than it doesn't seem to be working for this pain. He was in so much pain for those seconds that I was afraid he was going to bite me. He started thrashing about, leaning back on me and looking wild. He was howling and "screaming" at the top of his lungs. I just held him and hoped for it to stop.

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us. Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
Hi Pam,
I am glad to hear from you. I don't know what or where to check for Pm's. I called this morning and left my number again. I am so glad to hear from you.

It just happened again. HORRIBLE> He jumped up out of his sleep and hunched up and started wailing. My mastiff wanted to fight him and chaos broke out. I am shaking. He is so tense and panting very strongly. I touch him to calm him and he flinches. I kicked the other dogs out and am just trying to comfort him. At this point I think I will take a chance on losing my job by telling them I can't come back today. I don't want to leave him to fight this alone. I didn't think I would be good at this because of the blood and gross stuff. There isn't any of that. I am not good at this because I can't handle him being in pain.

I'm so sorry, I know this is hard to go through. It will get better. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is:
breathe
and tell yourself
"I am strong. I can do this!"
Because if you believe you can't handle it, you won't. And Sammy will believe that he can't either. He doesn't want to see you so upset, which is what may part of what's making him so anxious. Dogs read human's feelings like a book.
Sammy needs you to be strong, so you must be strong. There is no other option if you want him to have a good recovery.
Breathe, go outside and have a cry, then breathe again. Come back inside, and tell yourself,
"I can do this!"

You named your forum posts 'Fighting for Sammy'; and that is what you are doing now, you are going through a part of the fight.
You have contacted Dr. Pam and hopefully you will have the Gabopentin soon if not already. Good battle plan.
But the advice to stay as calm as possible is another good tool. Sammy knows, and the stress you are experiencing is so upsetting for both of you. I am sending 'fighting' thoughts to give you stregnth.
I hope the medication brings relief and I also wish at least a few hours of pleasant, healing sleep for both you and Sammy.
Oh I thought I would share that the 'Phantom Pain ' doesn't really mean pain that is phantom. It relates to the phantom limb experiencing the pain.

-Diagnosed with osteosarcoma of her left front leg –
-Amputation July 23 2010 –
-The cancer didn't get her, but she is gone-
-She fought the cancer and loved life till bloat brought her down August 29th, 2010-
Now she watches over her mom and two new sisters, the Quad-Paws Serena and Maya
Sammy's mom - I'm so sorry! I can only imagine!
The pain has to do with the nerves healing. Nerve pain is excruciating as you have witnessed. Maybe you should keep him separate from the other dogs until you get the meds in him and feel like he is calm.
Just remember the saying, "this too shall pass". And we can have a good chuckle later on about it! Okay?
HUGS in the meantime!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Guess who got some sleep last night? Yea for Sammy and I! I am going to find a note book to write times and dates and prescriptions down. Yes Dr. Pam came through for me when my vet and the emergency place were battling it out. The actual specialist office where his am occured was very kind and concerned and went out of thier way to help but they haven't worked much with Gabapentin so they don't have any or subscribe it.
Sammy took his first pill at 5:15 and had a mild episode at 6. He was great until 10:15 (big one) and then not again until 4:30 (medium one). That is a whole lotta sleeping the rest of the time for him and I!!! A celebration in my mind is happening now.
Sammy wants to be with his pack and I thought that was fine as long as it was inside. My husband agreed with you cometdog, but I thought it would help motivate him to eat and drink. I was right but so was Hubby. The mastiff is the dominant male and only listens to me when my husband is around. It was scary getting in between them with Titans stiff frame, hair up on his neck but I wasn't going to let Sammy get attacked when he needed me most. My mastiff is 180 lbs. and very stocky. I will not be making this mistake again. I am just sad because I can see our mastiff "Titan" resenting the time we are spending with Sammy and that Sammy is now an inside dog, higher up the ladder so to speak.
Time is so short right now with all Sammy's needs that I haven't been able to spend one on one time with my other dogs, and the pack is rebelling. Thank goodness for a 3 day weekend, I will give extra "loves" to all of my crew and hopefully stifle some of the drama.
I am very hopeful that the Gabapentin will continue to improve the recovery for Sammy. I took a mental break like Jerry's pack suggested and tried to think about what I would want if it was me experiencing the pain. Calm nurses, lots of support and comfort sounded right, so that is what I will strive to be. It is amazing how missing a weeks worth of sleep affected me. It was making everything negative that was happening seem "enormous" and some of it was and is pretty bad but with last nights sleep I feel 90% better about being able to handle it.

I too had to separate Chloe from her "pack" Rocket because Rocket can be a little rough on Chloe (even though Rocket is about 20lbs smaller....). I didn't want anything to happen to Chloe's staples or remaining back leg when it was healing, so we had to keep them apart until Chloe had healed more. I understand your dilemma with the dogs, but its only temporary so hang in there!
-Chloe's mom
Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
I'm so glad that Sammy and you had some sleep! We are sending lots of healing and resting thoughts your way!
Our vet had us ice Holly's incision 3 times a day for 10 minutes with a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a light kitchen towel. She seemed to really like that, and there were a few times that she had phantom pain (but not severe like Sammy) and icing it helped to calm her down. I'd ask if it's ok to try that with Sammy.
Big hugs,

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Something happened to my post! I will try to recreate some of what I wrote.
Two weeks will be over before you know it. Most of the dogs are doing real well after that point, some sooner, some a little later we all agree that the first two weeks are hard. On top of the worry not getting any sleep has got to be hard.
If the gabebetin doesn't work you might want to consider taking her off of trandadol.. Emily stared into space and cried a lot while she was on it.
Keep us informed. I will be praying for you and Sammy.

Hi Sammy's mom
I just want to give you something you can do if Titan looks like he wants to fight again. Instead of getting between them, put a towel or jacket, or whatever screening-type thing is at hand, over his face, covering his eyes. I've used that trick more than once and it seems to work. You can also use it to pull him back a little and take his mind off Sammy (keeping his eyes covered).
I hope it doesn't happen again. Big dog fights are scary.
