Hi Everyone, I had a few minutes so I thought I would post a quick Riley update.
His surgery was last Thursday so it's been 3 full days since and he's doing very well. He has eaten, gone #2 a few times, drank lots of water, gone walking around the backyard multiple times, etc.
I'm honestly shocked and in awe of him. He is doing so amazing and we have been praising him for every little victory.
Just like every dog who faced this horrible diagnosis, they don't deserve this. Life can be very unfair. That being said, as long as he is fighting we will be right beside him.
Our new vet has been Amazing! On Saturday Rily had quite a bit of blood consistently dripping from his scar. It seemed worse than normal "seepage" so I called their emergency line. I talked with the vet and he said it was probably just seepage but said he wanted to come over really quick and check him out.
He came over and Riley started wagging his tale. It was the first time after surgery and I started to cry.
I could almost hear Riley say, "I'm glad to see you but you won't believe what happened when I took a nap at your place!" (gotta find some humor where we can)
I've never had a vet be so kind and caring. He checked him out and said it was just seepage and should stop in a day or so which it did. He didn't even charge us or anything. He said he just wanted to make sure he was ok. Also, the vet said he couldn't believe Riley wasn't limping before surgery because when he removed his leg he said the bone cancer had made that leg very weak and he was probably hiding a lot of pain. He said we definitely made the right decision. As hard as it was.
The really only eventful thing was Riley loves to lay on the couch. Yesterday, we turned our backs for a second (shift change - lol) and we found him there. We were shocked he got up there. He was sitting and you could see the gears moving as he was figuring out how to get in his "spot" He likes to curl up in a tiny ball and be covered up.
He pushed his side into the couch and used it to slide down. It was pretty smart and amazing!
My wife was sitting next to him for about 45 mins and all of a sudden he pops up and decides he was going to lay a different way. He lost his balance and had to basically jump off the couch and catch himself on his one remaining front leg. I thought my wife was going to faint!
He did surprisingly really well but started panting immediately so we assumed he scared himself and caused himself some pain. We gave him some pain meds and he relaxed for a bit.
Since then he keeps coming back over to the couch to see what we will do. I keep telling him once he gets stronger he should be able to get back on the couch. He also decided on one of our bathroom breaks he was going to go upstairs to where he used to sleep before surgery.
We took off the leash for a second and he starts hopping toward the stairs as fast as he can. It was a little funny and a little sad.
Once he gets his stitches out I'm planning on carrying him upstairs to his old spot.
Tuesday he gets his first immunotherapy shot. He will get one per week for the next 3 weeks and then we have to travel to Ohio for the apheresis That's gonna be a long day! It's about 3.5 hours for us one way. I've already booked a pet-friendly hotel for a couple of nights so we are ready for anything. Then, we will have to go down there one more time. I'm hoping I can give him some Trazadone or something to relax him on the way down.
I'd like to start blogging about his journey if I have the time but I wanted to share a short update.
Thanks again for all prayers sent our way.
God Bless
Here are some recent photos of Riley before and after surgery.
YAY RILEY!! I have been wondering about you guys, and so excited to see he's doing so so well!
Cheers to celebrating every little victory, I think that's the key- being present with your baby and enjoying them doing better.
That's pretty crazy about the lack of limping! I'm glad you decided to as all- I know my vet told me the difference between acute pain and chronic pain and how even though after the surgery a dog can be in acute pain it's often much more easily managed than the chronic pain, made me feel even better about going through the amputation.
Poor baby lost all his best napping spots It's not forever Riley! Too bad you can't explain that it's for his own good.
I had to look up what apheresis was, haha. What an exciting treatment! I look forward to hearing how it goes and for your blog!
Thank you so much for sharing pictures, Riley is such a handsome boy and obviously incredibly well loved. It truly warms my heart to hear him doing so well, I'm not gonna lie I was starting to get worried when there weren't any posts, but lord knows you are busy busy!
Here's to continued healing for Riley!
Ohhh you sweet boy! Look at you just melting hearts and charming everypawdy with your pawesome attitude!
I'm so happy he's doing really well. Dogs just know how to move forward and not look back, don't they? We have so much to learn from them in a situation like this, and always. He's going to continue to amaze you
Your vet sounds EXCELLENT! A home visit? WOW! Seriously, you guys got so lucky to find that vet. What a bonus!
Keep doing what you're doing. Using good judgement, keeping his activity level down a few notches, and staying pawsitive! It all adds up to KICKING CANCER'S BUTT!
Can't wait to find out how the Ohio visit goes. Riley's going to be so glad to get out of the house for something other than an amputation lol!
Oh, and now that he's on the mend you can start a new topic in Treatment and Recovery. Congrats on graduating!
Oh Riley! Yoj are such a feisty fella'😎 Nothing holds you back from doing what you want when you wwnt! Thwt determination is why you have powered through the pain you certainly had to have from that bum leg and why you are having such a spectacular recovery.
Trying to make him recover sloooowly and at a safe pace has to be a challenge. Good job of monitoring him.
All of the protocol he is on does indeed sound tiring, mentally and physically. Just like recovery though, it does not last furever!! Thank you for detailing what's gonna happen and when. Good idea to check out hotels so you won't be stressed should you need to stay an little extra time.
BTW.....loved the pictures! Riley is such a handsome boy. The one of him snuggling with his hooman is so,precious 🥰
Hugs
