So glad it's fungal not cancer.  Now hopefully the anti fungal medicines will fix her right up.  They also may be playing a role in her not wanting to eat too.  Maybe her tummy is a bit upset?  Hopefully beautiful Sheba will soon be feeling much better!  Fingers crossed for you guys to get a good nights sleep tonight!  ALL of you!  This journey is exhausting 😳😳

Hugs,

Linda, we all slept last night!  After 1am meds we all slept straight until 8! She missed 3am trazodone, but we're trying to wean her off of that anyway.  Both the antibiotic and antifungal she's on cause gastrointestinal upset from nausea and vomiting to diarrhea.  She's done with the antibiotic tomorrow, but we've got at least 4-6 months of antifungal treatment.  I'm hoping getting the antibiotic and fentanyl out of her system tomorrow will help.  Today we were only able to get her to eat chicken and venison.  The vets office said to feed her whatever she wants for now.  More than anything I just want her to poop normal.  im so afraid she'll fall into her poop and get the incision infected!

Cynthia and Sheba

Right rear amputation 6/30/16 due to osteomyelitis of fungal origin (Aspergillus Penicillium).
Final diagnosis - systemic Aspergilosis Penicilliosis, being treated with long term itraconazole.
8/15/16 - Probable spinal involvement, loss of appetite, neurology consult in the works.

So glad to hear!  I'm sure once some of those drugs are done she'll be feeling better too.  Have you tried pumpkin for firming up stools? The pure pumpkin in the can not the premixed pumpkin pie can.   A tablespoon or two mixed with their food works really well and even my picky collie eater loves it.  Plus it's really good for them.  If she would happen to fall in her poop just clean the incision with some boiled cooled water and she'd be fine.  Before you know it stitches will be out and then you'll really see your beautiful girl shine 😀.

Hugs!

Murphy takes antibiotics every month for the bacteria in his mouth.  Ever since he started eating the grain-free food he has horrid bad breath.  When he went in for his appointment this year the vet wanted to set up a dental for him because his teeth need cleaning.  But I don't really want him to have anesthesia, and I really don't want to spend the money on something like that - he's survived 3 years already when his prognosis was 12-18 months, it seems silly to spend over $150 plus the risks of anesthesia for a teeth cleaning.  So when he suggested that we could do antibiotics to kill the bacteria, I agreed.  But they tend to make Murphy nauseas, so he gets Zantac with every dose.  It seems to help.

We've had 4 days of essentially liquid poop.  Finished the antibiotic Sunday, that might help.  No more fentanyl to stop he up, but it obviously wasn't helping us this weekend! Doc said to taper off the gabapentin to see if that helps, but it could all be the antifungals and we cant stop those.  She recommended a consult with he dietary people at Davis, also gave us the name of a local gal, since w plan to go Raw, or at least home cooked.  ill look into that today.  NO MORE PUMPKIN!  She thinks that might be making it worse so we're going to go a week with out it.  the funny thing about pumpkin is that half our dogs it firms them up, the other half it loosens them up.  Go Figure!poopicon_pngpoopicon_pngpoopicon_pngpoopicon_png

Oh no!  Poor baby!  Well let's hope it's not the antifungals causing it, and she gets better soon!   Even if it is the anti fungals causing it wouldn't there be a chance her system would get used to them at some point?  Hopefully you can get some good info from the people at Davis to help you get this under control soon!   Hugs!

Well, if it is the antifungals, she might get used to it she might not.  The fact that we're going to throw another into the mix tomorrow probably wont help.  I'm not sure I can handle 6+ months of liquid poop!

Oi, Jerry, what happened to the Shepherd belly? The GSDs I grew up with ate food you could buy in the store and never had problems!  Then again, that was 20 years ago.

Clay?  you mean that gunk in grandma's fancy face goop!?  Looks worth a try, I'll just have to check if its ok to give with the itraconazole.  if not, we can still buy some and make fancy mud masks!

Yrah, the first time I heard about pumpkin used to help with constipation was here....And then I heard here it was also good for diarrhea! Makes no sense to me either!

So maybe stopping the pumpkin will do the trick.

Is she eating any better?

Just keep reminding yourself that this IS curable and the treatment will work a d be over before you knkw it.

Let us know how being off the pumpkin and off the Gaba does. And thank you for taking the time to update us on your sweet girl. BTW, you jave a great sense of humor to help cpget you through this ordealway-cool

My vet has told me in the past that Immodium is ok to use for diarrhea, but I don't know what the dosage would be since I haven't used it yet (Cassie sometimes has issues when she gets bunnies)

She's still refusing kibble, but she's eating chicken and rice like she's been starved!  I'm headed over to the UC Davis site in a few minutes to see what we need to do to get a consult.

We've used peptobismol in the past, but it affects the absorption of the antifungals so the vet wants us to try med and food changes first.  Tonight is the last dose of Gabapentin, then we'll see if her poop gets better tomorrow before adding the second antifungal to the mix, which could make it all worse!

How hard can it be?!  We've got our third diagnosis today.  Latest culture results say Penicillium rather than Aspergillosis.  OMD, this isn't rocket science!  The lab that's been doing the histopath is now in over their heads and sending Sheba's cultures to Texas for further speciation and drug susceptibility.  Maybe it all should have started there!  So frustrated!
