Hi from England
We have the most beautiful Labradoodle (Bert) who has been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the front right leg. Initial CT scans show no metastasizion? currently. But it does demonstrate (as we thought) arthritis on his left hip. Now we are faced with a decision of amputation plus possible chemo and the chance he cannot cope as a Tripaw or EOL.
The vets who are incredible have not indicated one way or another, but have spoken about quality of life post any surgery. They actually recommended we look at this site for knowledge and advice.
Does anyone or has anyone had a similar dilemma?
Thanks
Hey Bert & furmily,
Sorry about the diagnosis. It makes it tougher that you saw the arthritis, but rest assured many dogs with arthritis have done pretty well after losing a limb.
We have a ton of examples for you. I think I should get a tag going for "three-legged dogs with arthritis" just because there have been so many over the years. One who comes to mind is Meg. She's actually in your corner of the world and you can read her blog to see how well she's doing. If you private message her mum Clare I know she'd be happy to talk to you. She has another good post about her ketamine for arthritis treatments here.
Basically what we have learned from ortho vets and physiotherapists is that if you keep your Tripawd slimmer than average, and understand what is appropriate and inappropriate physical activity, arthritis can be managed. It's a big reason why we encourage folks to see a physiotherapist with their new Tripawds. Our foundation can even pay for your first rehab visit !
If you are still undecided, a consult with an orthopedic vet would be a good way to put your mind at ease either way.
I hope this helps!
P.S. Please thank your vets for us. It's an honor when any vet sends their client over here. Feel free to request some Tripawds Outreach Brochures and we'll get them mailed out to you or them directly.

Hi
After much soul searching and research, mainly from this website and the lovely people on these forums, we decided that our lovely Bert deserves a chance to confound some of us. His appetite remains as was and he still has the sparkle in his eyes and a lovely wet nose!
So.......he is booked in for limb amputation on Friday (fingers crossed) after his surgeon consultation tomorrow.
We will keep you updated.
Thanks
Cancer is a heartbreaker but Bert is very fortunate to have parents like you looking after him. You know him so well and sounds like you had that non-verbal heart to heart talk with him that helped you decide. Dogs tell us what they want, just in their own way, don't they?
OK fingers crossed everything goes well with the consult. Keep us posted!
