Thank you for posting this progress report! We are about to go through this (Nikki is scheduled for her operation in 4 days) and I don't mind saying that I am worried and scared. When I came home from work tonight Nikki was so happy, jumping and playing like she used to, it's so hard to believe that she's sick, and it would be very easy not to go through with this treatment plan... Good to read a happy story!
Time for an update on Shadow. He had his 3 month scheduled checkup at MSU on 3/24. His results were good, no
visible Mets in the lungs and his other problems were either unchanged or somewhat better. He has however had
a problem with diarrhea starting the day following his visit the last two times he was at MSU. I don't do anything different
as far as his food or medication prior to going for his checkup, and it takes about a week of treatment with Lomotil
to get him back to normal. The only thing that he is given at MSU is an IV sedative and a reversal drug. Those
are 4mg butorphanol and 0.05 dexdormitor for sedation and the reversal was 0.05 ml atipamezole i.m.
If there is anyone on this forum that is familiar with these drugs and can tell if any of these can be causing the diarrhea
I would like to know. Shadow is in good spirits, eats well, and still looks forward to our daily one mile walk.
Hi Shadow!
That's great news except for the tummy issues. I'm sorry I don't know anything about the drugs but somene might.
Are you the same Shadow that started this post from October of 2008??
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
We don't have experience with those meds either, but perhaps this Nutrition post with Nausea Remedies for Tripawds may be of some help for Shadow's upset stomach. Thanks for the update!

Shadow,
Glad to hear that you had a good checkup. I always found that these "sedatives" that they gave me really knocked me for a loop. Dad says that he is not sure what they gave me specifically, but says that it took me about a week to fully recover. I guess that he is right because much of the time after is a cloud. Perhaps our great friend Pam will comment later on the specifics to help you Family to feel better. Just keep enjoying the walks and every day - they are special.

I answered cometdog's question in a private message, but after doing it I thought that there
may be others who wondered if this is the same Shadow from October 2008 and it is.
I had a problem with my previous browser when this site went to a new server and was unable
to post, so I had to re-register and use a different browser. That is why it only shows a few
posts for this ID.

We're glad you're able to post now, but we only have one user "Shadow" who registered in May, 2009. You say you re-registerred? If so, what name did you use? Or, is that when you joined with the username Shadow? The low post count is likely because many of your first posts were made as a Guest.
Regardless, we are happy to have you back and hear that Shadow is still doing well!

Hi Shadow! Glad to hear your 3 months checkup went really well. I looked on the internet about the three drugs your were inquiring about as far as causing diarrhea. Butorphanol would most likedly not be the cause of the diarrhea as it is an opiate and they are know to cause constipation. So, I looked further and both atipamezole and dexdomitor can cause diarrhea. It sounds as though Shadow's problem is quite severe if you have to have her on Lomotil for a week. I'd holler at my vet and see what they say and, perhaps, other drugs could be utiliized in the future so Shadow's tummy calms down. Just a thought and I hope this info helps.

Hi Shadow,
Happy 3 month ampuversary!!! Glad to hear you're doing OK, except for the icky diarrhea... I don't think that the sedative/reversal drugs you mentioned would cause it... Could just be from stress.
Obviously, your vets have already done a fecal to rule out any parasites, right? So, what are they giving Shadow for the diarrhea right now? Have you stopped feeding your regular food and tried just rice with boiled hamberger or chicken? Besides loperamid, I also use kaolin/pectin whenever my doggies get occasional diarrhea... also some Benebac (beneficial bacteria) paste to replace the normal flora in the gut. But always check with your vet before giving any over the counter medications. Also, prolonged diarrhea can cause dehydration, so be sure that Shadow is getting plenty of fluids... Good luck!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
To clarify Shdow's history. His amputation was done 10-30-2008, followed by Chemo. with 7 alternating treatments of carboplatin and
doxorubicin. After his standard Chemo. treatment, he was started on Metronomic Chemotherapy using chlorambucil, Actos and Zubrin.
Actos and Zubrin are given every day and chlorambucil every other day. He is on a 3 month re-check schedule at this time for x-rays
and ultrasound.
Hmmm… none of those drugs (from your earlier post) sound familiar from when my Yoda was going through bone cancer – if you even still had questions about those – but HOPPY AMPUVERSARY SHADOW!!! (For whichever month's ampuversary is closest )
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
