Hello, my beautiful girl, Lucy Lulu (almost 7 yr old lab x) has last week had surgery after an MRI came back with thickness in two nerves. The surgery was going to be nerve removal but they ended up doing a large biopsy and she has been diagnosed with a rare condition called intraneural perineurioma that has affected her front left leg.
If by chance anyone has heard of this or experienced it with their pup, I’d be appreciative to hear from you.
The vets recommendation is amputation and while they are hopeful it will cure the condition they are literally going of the one case study on a German Shepard and research articles on the condition in humans. We are facing unknowns, my vet has been amazing and now it’s about preparing for the next step while staying hopeful this will have Lucy heal with full recovery of her health so she can enjoy her future doggy days and shenanigans with Kingston (our 4 yr old mastiff x) who has been such a good support buddy
I’m glad to have found Tripawds ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Jaimie and Lucy Lulu, welcome. We are so glad you found us too! I'm sorry you had to join the club nopawdy wants to join, but we you've come to the right place for support.
I've never heard of this condition so I looked it up. And I'm not a vet but in my non-vet interpretation, it sounds like a more precise name for a type of nerve sheath tumor. In that case, if that's what it is, many members here have lost a leg to nerve sheath tumors so you are definitely not alone. The good news as you know is that these tumors typically don't metastasize and amputation is curative so YAY! In the world of lost limbs due to cancer, that's as good as it gets! Yeah!
How can we help you? Do you have questions for us? Whatever we can do to put your mind at ease just let us know. Meanwhile don't forget to check out the Tripawds e-books , Jerry's Required Reading List and also consider getting a referral for Lacy Lulu to see a canine rehabilitation therapist.
Most dogs bounce back quickly after amputation surgery, but rehab is soooo good for showing us how to help them get strong and stay injury free for life. Plus, as she ages, it's good to have a contact who knows her so they can help you ensure a gentle aging process on three. In fact the Tripawds Foundation so strongly believes rehab can make a difference, that the foundation may even pay for your first rehab visit ! Click on the links for more info.
When is the big surgery day?
