Hello everyone, my 10 year old male Rottweiler named Simba was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had his right front leg amputated. He is recovering well. He is adjusting, me on the other hand, is getting there. After learning of Tripawds I feel much better and I just bought "Three legs and spare". My vet mentioned to me that he would like to start chemo soon. He said they would be using Doxorubicin every 3 weeks for about 5 doses. I would like some advise on that drug? Has anyone ever been through this?
Also I have been speaking with a lady from McDowells in Austrailia about some natural herbs to help with osteosarcoma. Has anyone ever used that? Or that and chemo together? I just want my baby to have a great quality of life and praying that I get much much more time with him. I am willing to do whatever I need to.
We have not gotten the biopsy results back yet. I pray that it has not spread and the very very small chance it is a fungal infection. I guess I will know more once the results are in. But if anyone could just pray and tell me your experiences that would be great. Thanks Adriana.
Hi Adriana and Simba, welcome. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away. I'm sorry you had to join our community, cancer is a heartbreaker. But we hope to make this journey as easy as possible and as Simba is already showing, he's going to keep amazing you with his ability to bounce back and get on with life! It sounds like he hasn't been home very long?
I'm so glad you found our book useful! Feel free to ask any questions you'd like that you don't see answered there.
So are you in the states or Australia? I ask because Doxorubicin isn't the usual chemo treatment for osteosarcoma. In the US and Europe we tend to see most dogs getting 4 to 6 rounds of carboplatin for osteosarcoma. Did your vet say why they want to go the Doxo route?
As for the herbals...well I looked up that company and the very expensive 'remedies' they are selling. While I'm totally in favor of a full-spectrum approach like Dr. Dressler of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide , I'm very skeptical about things like this after managing this community for 12+ years. I'm not a vet, but I don't see any credible scientific evidence showing that the ingredients work. If they did, we would be hearing lots more about them. So I'll tell you what I told Duke's people when they also asked about herbal remedies for dog cancer:
As for alternatives, you’ll save yourself a lot of money and effort by talking to an oncologist who is more oriented to natural medicine. There is so much money that gets wasted by parents looking for cancer therapy, and lots of snake oil salespeople ready to take your dollars. A vet can help you cut through the garbage.
Does this help? I hope so! Let me know OK? And keep us posted. Remember, you set the tone for Simba's recovery so the more pawsitive you can be, the more he will respond with improvement.

Thank you so much for all the information. And all the kind words. I’m in the US. I have just been trying to do a lot of research after learning of this! Simba got home a week ago today. The vet told me he wanted to do doxorubicin. That’s why I wanted to see if any one else has been through this. After he goes back for his post op appointment I’m going to ask him to give us a referral for an oncologist. I just want what’s best for my Simba!
Also he has been having some incontinent problems after surgery. He is currently taking gabapentin and previcox. I don’t know if this incontience is stress related or the meds.
Hmmm. Yeah I would definitely talk to a board-certified oncologist. You are a pawesome advocate for Simba!
The incontinence is a twist but hopefully nothing serious. I would mention that to the oncologist if you get in soon, or let your vet know. If gabapentin is making him super sedated that could be the problem. I don't know if Previcox would do that.
