Welcome home Xena!  I'm so glad you got a happy girl when you picked her up.  Be careful not to let her overdo it.  That local anesthetic is keeping her from feeling the pain so she may try to do more than she should.

Libby is a front right amp. She came home bandaged so I didn't have a visible seeping issue.  After her bandages came off I cut one of my husbands t-shirt right at the waist and trimmed the sleeves.  I put that on her to keep the area clean.  I used a safety pin to secure it so it didn't drag and get her good foot caught in it.  That may help your issue.

Others here may have better ideas.

Way to go Xena!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

...should I keep the same routine for her?

Definitely. As the doctors at CARE suggest, if you want life to be normal again you must act as though life is normal. What Xena needs most is for you to set an example as strong balanced pack leader that all is well.

Glad to hear she's doing so great! She came home the same day? Please keep us posted.

FY: You can put an old t-shirt on Xena to keep the incision area clean. Read more about post-surgery wound care for dogs in the Tripawds News blog .

Chloe,

I'm very glad to hear that Xena is doing so good.

Here's my recent experiences...

Food:  My Brendol is on day 10 post amputation and she's acting like nothing has changed.  But when I got her home, she was very lethargic (as expected) for the first 3 days.  She wasn't all that interested in her food, so I would add some moist food to her kibble and then she thought she was in heaven and ate like a champ.

Stairs:  Stairs were a huge concern for me too.  We have 3 to get up to get into the house, which was a breeze for her since she's a front amputee.  But then we had 2 and then another 4 to get out the back of the house to the yard.  That she wouldn't even attempt for 4 days.  I tried a sling that I made of an old pillow case, so that it could distribute the weight under her for support and it was long enough for me to stand upright and give her help.  Turns out, she didn't trust me with it and still wouldn't attempt the stairs, so I ended up having to carry her down.  When I had other people there to help, I could spot her down with the sling because then she was interested in going to them.  I also have a two-story house, so I slept downstairs for the first 3 nights and then on the 4th day, I went upstairs to get something and she followed me up the whole flight on her own.  Bad news was I still had to get her down.  So for the first two times, I ended up carrying her down.  But by the morning of the 5th day, she was going down all the stairs on her own.  She's a bit stubborn and just doesn't like me helping her.

Depression:  Some have mentioned that your dog may go into a little bit of a funk.  My Brendol didn't completely go into a funk, but she just wasn't as peppy as usual while still healing.  I understood.  But I also got friends to come visit which always made her so happy.  I think having visitors come over has helped her cope so much better.

Incision:  Brendol's vet did not bandage up her incision.  We did have a drain for the first 4 days.  So I kept a t-shirt on her the same as others on this post have said.  It worked great to keep her from messing with her stitiches and also to protect furniture from the small bits of weeping that occured from the drain site.  The incision site never had any problems so far.

Once I had to come back to work, I put her in a tshirt and an e-collar.  Now that she's feeling good, the t-shirt didn't stay on very long.  She somehow has figured out how to get it off.  So I've abondoned that.  But the e-collar is on when I'm not there to monitor her.  Today should be the last day for the collar because we will already be getting the stitches out on Monday.

That's the extent of what I've dealt with so far.  I hope Xena continues to impress you, as I'm sure she will superstar.

Karma and Brendol

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Thankyou guys the tshirt trick has worked great :) she has been down for another wee as she was telling me she needed to go, we went down but i made her take a break on the way down so she could rest, not that she wanted to but like you guys said she wont realise as shes on her meds. She got a bit hot and has now decided she is more comfortable on the cool tiled floor even though i have made beds up all around the house for her :) shes been great today, she had her anaesthetic at 8pm and is due again at 2am and every 6 hours from then on and shes to be great. She also keeps giving me her paw and sitting on her bum like a clever girl :) she always did that as we say she punches us when she wants something :) thanks again guys! Yes, she came out the same day. My vet said a dog becomes stressed when it is away from their family or home for too long and thinks the best way to keep her happy is to get her home as soon as poss. This post "Adding Images" will tell you how. If you still have trouble let us know and we'll post it for you if you email it to us at jerry-at-tripawds-dot-com.

What great news to hear that she's home and doing so well. Yes, many dogs prefer to lay on cool surfaces, especially when they've got a wound like that. Keep an eye on her incision to make sure it's kept clean and if you see anything weird, like bad-smelling discharge, call your vet. Has she eaten anything today? Don't be surprised if she isn't really hungry, but you do want to encourage her to drink water. Adding ice or low-sodium broth to her water can help.

Good luck! I can't wait to see some pix!

Super duper!  Yey!  Bathroom activities and a bit of normal routine.  Keep it up!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!
