Hi Karen

Has any urine been analysed yet? Can she concentrate her urine and how is the protein? If she hesitates about letting you 'catch' the pee, try to make a holder out of a long coat hanger. It got to the point where Tazzie refused to pee when I was too close with the container.

Cancer diets tend to be high in protein due to the reduction in carbs. Kidney diets tend to be low in protein, which would mean more carbs (but I think they have been revised to medium since our time as a kidney dog). Your goal will probably to find a diet that balances issues for both, although I suspect kidneys will be your more pressing concern. A few diets suitable for kidney / cancer dogs have been posted on this website (probably around Aug-Sept). They seem to start with the cancer diet and modify it to make it acceptable for a kidney dog. Complex carbs that take longer to break down (e.g, oatmeal and brown rice) will be preferable to simple carbos that convert quickly to sugar (e.g, white rice, potatoes).

Spud Power. Love it! 🙂

For the task at hand, I've heard of taping a Dixie cup to a broomstick helps. Though I guess you don't have much room to work with, since Maggie is so close to the ground. Good luck and keep us posted.

Susan,

We did do a urinalysis last week when we did the blood work.  The specific gravity was a little low, just under what I have read to be normal, and the protein came back as trace.  Everything else looks OK.  My struggle with Maggie right now is just to get her to eat anything.  All I can get her to eat in the morning is a little chicken or turkey.  Actually she turned down chicken and took turkey this morning.  She also seems to eat better later in the day, so I am going to try and make her big meals lunch and dinner.  She really doesn't want to eat in the morning- on work days anyway.  I think moderate protein is the thing now, at least at the stage Mag is at.

Jim- remember how low to the ground Mag is- we are talking maybe a 1/4 inch clearance.  And she has what I call a saddle bag on her amp side that touches the ground when she squats.  However she doesn't hear well so I'm hoping to sneak up behind...

My back up plan is to let her pee in my lap again, then just wring my PJ's out into the little cup Big Grin

Karen
