I took Mag to the vet today because she has not been able to keep the little food I can get her to eat down. We decided to do IV fluids and some anti-nausea meds and recheck some of her kidney values. The kidney values from last week came back a little worse than the first two. In the past two weeks Mag has gone from eating pretty well to eating almost nothing. Last Thursday she weighed 16 pounds, today she was down to 15 lbs 10 oz. She should be about 2 lbs heavier. The kidney numbers today were about the same as last week. I have been doing sub-Q fluids at home for two weeks. We did get the incontinence pretty well under control.
My vet Linda decided to check her mouth to make sure there are no teeth issues and she found what she belives to be a well connected melanoma on the roof of Mag's mouth. Linda took a sample and we are having it checked. I should get the results in a couple of days.
I had previously decided that I wouldn't put Mag through any more aggressive or invasive treatments, nothing has changed my mind. Besides, even in the best of circumstances removing a melanoma from inside the mouth is difficult. And with Mag's compromised kidneys she is not a good candidate for surgery.
So, I am hoping she will eat something tomorrow, and that she feels OK. As always we will take it day by day.
I will let you know when I get test results back.

Karen, our hearts sank when we saw the headline. Please give that pretty girl a big hug, and tell her that all of us are thinking of her and love her soooo much. Our paws are crossed for a better outcome.
It's good to hear the incontinence is under control, along with your laundry. How are you holding up?

Hi Karen,
Lots of hugs and pawsitive thoughts coming your way. I wonder if you have spoken to your vet about Cimetidine (Tagamet)and it's positive effect on reducing melanoma. It is a readily available drug with few, if any, side effects. A couple of different studies have been done in the UK, one on people and another on horses with melanoma. Both got great results. I spoke with my Onco Vet expecting her to know nothing about it and poo poo the idea of trying it. Suprisingly she knew all about some other studies conducted at vet schools using Cimetidine and wrote me a prescription (prescription needed in Canada only). As she said, it can't hurt and who knows it might help. Just a suggestion as it would be neither aggressive or invasive. In the meantime enjoy every moment with your precious girl and give her extra hugs from Tai and me.

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.
Lots and lots of good thoughts for Maggie (and you). Hope our little pumpkin is feeling better soon.

Oh Karen,
I'm so sorry to read the latest news about your sweet Maggie. Like you didn't have enough to worry about with her kidneys... now possible melanoma! Does the vet think that the lesion in Maggie's mouth has anything to do with her not wanting to eat?
I really hope and pray that the path comes back benign... and then you can go back to concentrating on her other issue. I hope that the IV fluids will help to bring her kidney values down...
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Maggie! Sending you both a big fat hug!!!

Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)
My sweet golden Mackenzie. She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2 although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009. She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes. I love you Mackenzie!
Tri-Pug Power! We're thinking of you too, and Maggie has all our positive thoughts.
