For less expensive alternatives to chemo, I'll copy here what I wrote to Stella's mom:

For supplements, I would highly recommend Dr. Dressler's Dog Cancer Survival Guide . He discusses all the conventional as well as holistic treatments and does a great job of organizing all the supplement info. It makes all that overwhelming info out there on the 'net digestible.

I would also recommend looking into artemisinin . There is a Yahoo Group you can join – I think ti's "cancer_and_artemisinin" and is specifically for dogs w/ cancer. The folks on there are very knowledgeable. The protocol is a little confusing at first, but it's not that bad. (It's just a little tricky, cuz you have to give the pills 4 hrs away from any thing w/ iron in it.) If you have questions, send me a PM. I can tell you what we did w/ Abby.

Don't worry about not doing chemo. I've seen dogs here do well with it and without it. I know the stastics are supposed to be that dogs do better w/ it – but do those stats really keep count of folks that treat their dogs holistically w/ supplements at home? Maybe not… It seems kinda like a crap shoot to me. But then, I'm no vet…

Hope that helps and that you have a lot of wonderful time left with Luke. There is never going to be "enough" time with our pups, so we have to make enough of whatever time we have. We all have to continually work on being more "dog" and living in the now. And right "now" I need to go take my girl for a walk! 🙂

Hang in there, and keep us posted,

Jackie, Angel Abby & MBBunny Rita's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I am sorry that you and Luke are facing this, but because you are, this is a great site to be apart of in dealing with cancer.  We didn't face that either, but I know of a few here who have.

I understand about the finances too, my boy was and always will be my heart dog and I took out loans and burned up all my credit cards to do everything I could.  Now, after 17 awesome months with him he is gone, but the debt remains.  Every time I write out a check, I think of him.  Do I regret that?  I don't know, I wanted to do the best I could for him, but the reality is I have to pay $350 a month on cards and it won't be paid off for almost 10 years.  That is a huge part of my budget, so I think finances are an enormous factor, a sad huge factor.  It is what it is.

I did find that there is a cheaper chemo, a generic version of carboplatin.  I don't know what they use for mast cell, but if that is it, you could do generic.  Also there is a daily pill that was only $45 a month for my 100 lb boy.  It might be much less for your little guy, if it is what is used for his type of cancer.  There are lots of great suppliments too, Abby's mom is pointing you in a good direction.

Anyway, best of luck!

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the right front leg 8/23/10,

leg fractured 8/27/10,

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.
