This all sounds so familiar, the shaking and the panting, the worry. But I just wanted to echo what everyone else is saying, this is the worst bit for sure. We are 5 weeks post amp tomorrow, and oh what a difference!
2 week seems to be the magic number for many dogs I've read about here and this was also the case for our guy Beau, about 2 weeks we started to feel we were over the worst, but when the staples came out at 3 weeks was when we saw the real difference in general comfort levels and his sparkle came back. He's improved every day since then.
It's like climbing up a mountain with your pup, it's tough, you're tired, Karl's hurting, you never think you'll make it, but you keep going together. Each step gets you closer and when you finally get to the top it's such a relief. All the pains gone and the view from the top is so worth it! Of course every dogs journey is different but one things for sure, every day he heals that little bit more.
Keep going, it sounds like you're doing a wonderful job for sweet Karl! Keep us updated! I keep checking in to see how he's doing.

So sorry you guys had a ruff night.
Hope sweet Karl (and his people) have a much calmer, uneventful one tonight!
BIG HUGS (with the grownup beverage of your choice)!

Forever missing Koda's big brother, Sully (a/k/a James P. Sullivan), our first Anatolian and the Original Big Man (tm), who passed at age 10 1/2 from degenerative myelopathy on 6/27/13.
We did 3 Tramadol, 3x a day until the staples came out. We started tapering after, but continued with some tramadol into week 3. It actually was kind of obvious when he no longer needed it.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
I didn't read every comment but Hannah said exactly what I would have written!
2 weeks is like MAGIC. Not sure why!! You are doing such a great job. I'm glad you got Karl's meds straightened out. I had to tweek Buddy's too.
Just remember to breathe and keep telling yourself that IT WILL GET BETTER, cause guess what....it will. We promise!!!!!!
Hang in there and I'm glad you are keeping us updated!
Much love
Julie and Buddy
Boy, do I remember that first week or so when Susie got her days and nights turned around....and the pain meds are a double-edged sword. You sure don't want your dog in pain, but you don't want him or her overwhelmed by the side effects of the pain meds, either!!!
It won't be long before Karl is dancing to the music with you, pain-free (and pain-med free)!
Until that time, ((((hugs))))xxxx, ((((hugs))))xxxx and more (((((hugs)))))xxx coming your way from Nancy & Susie
I just kind of got caught up. I am sorry to hear you had a rough night the other night. I can not remember if Karl had a fentanyl patch or not but that can mess with some dogs. The first 2 weeks are the roughest. The first 3rd day home Sassy kind of whined and cried a little so we added Tramadol as needed but she was good after that.
You will have these little ups & downs but eventually the more ups and then you will start to see your boy again 🙂 Still early in the process. I learned when Sassy was napping to try to too unless I was working (Work from home).
Keep us updated
hugs

Wow ! It's been a few crazy days back and forth to the vet and trying to sleep when Karl sleeps,. I thank God I've had off of work this week. He's back on a fentynal patch because of some breakthrough pain that Tramadol just wasn't working well for. He was shaking and panting for hours on end.
Good news though, today he had an X-ray on his leg/ foot ( Love my vet) that he's been limping on , causing me much distress. It all looks fine hip and all! I feel like I won the lottery. Thank you God!
Thank you everyone, you are all awesome.
Hugs,,Karl and mom Julie
I'm pretty new to this so I can only offer you my support and some healing energy. I've been on an emotional roller coaster ride with my girl as well. The people here at Tripawds are absolutely amazing and have given you more help than I ever could. Big hugs to you and Karl!
Hey Julie glad to hear that he checked out fine at the vets. Some dogs do need to be on pain medication longer, glad you got that under control.
Oh, don't forget, now that you've graduated from the diagnosis phase, be sure to start a new topic in Treatment and Recovery so we can follow along with this phase OK? Thanks!
