Update from the doctor. She was very anxious over night in her kennel, but when they let her sit out of the kennel on a blanket on the floor, she calmed down. She doesn't want to walk yet, but that could just be because of the sedation. When they put her back in the kennel this morning, she did take two steps, so we know she can try.
They have stopped the constant pain medication to wean her from that, but she still gets periodic pain management . And, she got a "3 day local anesthetic" during the surgery. So, she's reasonably comfortable.
Going to keep her in the hospital at least through the rest of the day. They will try to get her up to walk again in a few hours to reassess her condition. They don't want to send her home until she is able to get around with a sling.
She had a little diarrhea over night and hasn't eaten anything yet.
So, more waiting but at least it's not bad news.
Nope, not bad news at all. Actually, quite normal at this point.
I love that Ginger let them know, even in her drug induced state, she was not happy being in that crate! Spunky gal!!
Yeah, it can take a couple of days sometines for dogs to start getting their sea legs, especially while dealing with hospital meds, shaking off anesthesia, etc,
Yep, it's "hurry up and wait" mode! Ugh!!

Ginger is HOME!!!!
She walked to the car on her own and hopped in and out with just a little help. She wasn't up to trying the stairs to the porch or her new ramp (she's never used it so she doesn't understand it), so we carried her into her bed. She seemed pretty dazed for a while, but after about an hour she got out of bed by herself, walked over to her favorite spot, and laid down for a nap. She knows she is home.
She will be taking gabapentin for pain (two weeks), simplicef antibiotic (one week), and Rovera anti-inflammatory (two weeks).
The incision site looks pretty scary, but the doctor said the skin will shrink and it won't look so bad later (plus the hair will grow back). We took pictures so we can compare with today's photo every day to look for any signs of infection or other problems.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words and good thoughts. We know the road ahead won't be easy, but having her home is the best.
YIPEEEEE! Oh that is terrific news, we are thrilled! Sounds like she is already making great progress.
Looks like we have quite a few Tripawds in recovery this weekend, you are in great company! Be sure to check out Fuzz and Arwen's recoveries when you get a chance.
Please keep us posted and let us know how things are going. Oh also, can you do us a favor? Please start a new topic in Treatment and Recovery now that Ginger has graduated from this one. Thanks!
