I am so happy to see how this thread has progressed, from despair, to hope, and now, pawsitive steps and moving forward to giving Max a pain free life on three!
I LOVE the attitude from the vets at UW! Way to go!
If you (and your son) are not sick of watching hoppy tripawd action videos yet check out Codie Rae's YouTube page. There is a video of her swimming and one of her herding sheep. She also starred in a music video (well, IMO there is not nearly enough footage of her in the video but it is pretty awesome anyway).
Sending you, your son, and Max lots of tripawd strength and lucky 13 juju from the Oaktown Pack,
Martha, Codie Rae, and the OP

Got a few minutes right now to do an update on Max. As someone suggested on here and we were told at UW Madison because they did see some discomfort on his left hip and remaining left leg we will do the Orthopedic tests to make sure he is a good candidate for surgery. We would hate to proceed with the amp only to discover his remaining back leg can't support him. Just dotting our i's and crossing our t's. Will let you know how that turns out today. It does require sedation but we want to be sure first. That's why we went to the UW in the first place to get the best care. To not follow their lead now would be senseless. Bobby has started him on Apocaps and the K-9 immunity (with Vet approval) and changed his diet to grain free . So we are moving forward one day at a time and loving him one day at a time. He's still his same old self so.......as you all say he doesn't know he's sick and keeps on keeping on.
So happy to see the support and love that this community once again has been able to give!
You know that we will all be here for you and your son as you go through this next phase with Max.

Hello Linda and Max.....we live in Green Bay! I would love to talk to you on the phone - Thursday mornings I'm on the helpline phone 9-noon); give me a call if you can and we can talk about things. My Dobe Nitro had his front leg removed last summer and is now 14 mos post amp. He's doing so well. Wausau - is that where you're from? - isn't too far from is.....if you're ever in the neighborhood you could see how well he's doing on 3 legs. He had his surgery at Fox Valley Referral in Appleton and they were the best!
hope to hear from you

Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Paula thanks so much for talking with me this morning. As I told you we have an appointment with Dr. Ryan Demianiuk at Fox Valley Referral Center on Monday at 12. My son is really having a hard time with amputation and I hope here he can get some answers. Fox Valley would be a closer drive for us so I hope it all goes well. This has to be his decision and somehow I need to be supportive even if it isn't what I would do for my own dog. It's just so hard because if he does decide not to amputate there just aren't many good choices left. I hope this vet will do his evaluation of Max's chances with amputation and what to expect to happen if he goes with the chemo and biophosphonate with radiation treatment. It is so hard watching Bob struggle with this decision. Second guessing yourself can drive you nuts. The UW was wonderful for doing the tests needed (except the ortho test they couldn't do it that day) but I think dealing with a one on one Dr will help Bob. Someone on here mentioned Dr Ryan and how they had confidence in him so I guess all we can do is have a consult. If Bob does go with the Bisphosponates and chemo he would be able to go there for them. Thank you everyone for all your support please say a prayer that we make the best choice we can for our wonderful Max. Because in the end that's all that counts is making the best quality of life choice. Since he cancelled the ortho tests at UW yesterday we will have them done at Fox Valley on Monday.
Thank you so much Paula.
Yep, quality of life is the only "right" decision in a situation like this. As for your son, if he wants to talk to any of us, please let us know, we'd be happy to do so. It's a tough thing to imagine but even harder to imagine our pups not being here. Ugh. I'm so sorry.
Paws, fingers, tails & toes are crossed. We will be thinking of you so keep us posted. {{{hugs}}}

My son and I just had a talk. He now is open to amputation. I think watching the pain meds not work that well this week has taken a toll on him. In fact our appointment Monday is a surgery consult he just told me. We discussed that the only way to get Max out of pain is to remove the leg and whatever comes after that comes. Max hasn't been using that leg much so maybe he's getting himself ready for surgery. He's such an overachiever our Max. Bob said if we go ahead with surgery it could possibly be Tuesday already. I'm sorry to be such a pain to you guys but I just wanted to let you all know because I feel each and every one of you is doing this journey with me. Thank you!!!!!
You are not a pain! I'm off this weekend if you want/need to talk.

Oh my goodness! You are NOT a pain and we are all doing this journey with you! You, and your son AND Max, are all family now! We understand the intensity of this journey like no others can!
Glad you were able to talk with Paula. She's been through it too and it's always good to insight from someone with first hand experience.
I love that Max is "an over achiever"as he "practices" walking on three legs!
Will look forward to your next update.
Sending lots of hugs to all!

Of course we are on this journey with you, always.
Poor pup, sorry to hear Max is hurting. By the time a dog shows the pain it's pretty bad. If it's any comfort to your son he's already learning how to get around on 3 legs now, by the time it comes off he'll be an expert.
Let us know how things go OK? We'll be thinking of you.

As everyone else said, you're not being a pain! It is a tough decision. We all want what is best for our pups and sometimes it is hard to come to grips w/ the idea that what might be best is amputation. But I think if he's in pain now, amputation is the only thing that will really relieve it.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
Max is currently an overnight guest of Fox Valley Referral Center in Appleton WI. He is scheduled for amputation surgery first thing in the morning. Dr. Ryan will be doing x-rays of his remaining back leg after he has put him out for surgery to make sure he is a good candidate but he thinks he will not find anything and surgery can be done. As much as I've advocated for surgery when we got back to the car I broke down and just sobbed. I guess it was the culmination of the last few weeks. Most importantly Bob feels very good about this Dr. who took the time to explain so much to him about the surgery and why it needed to be done. Bob said he would've been ready to let him go if he wasn't eating, wanting to play etc etc but he's still our mighty Max and seems to want to live. He said he has to give him his chance. I'm proud of him for making this heart wrenching decision. He knows Max is strong and a fighter. The Dr. said he's already a step ahead for this journey because he isn't using that foot much just as I expected. Expect me to ask a lot of questions in the days ahead after we get him home. All day yesterday I went through a lot of postings about the days after so I read about a lot of your journeys but I'm sure I'll still have questions. I will begin a new posting on the recovery and treatment page when that happens. Thank you so much to all of you for your support and unending wisdom!!
I love how Bob is now convinced and ready to move forward and now that the reality of the surgery has hit you like a ton of bricks, he's the one comforting you! And we are here for that purpose too!!
Your vet sounds like a really good one! I really like his attitude and ability to explain why this is necessary and why Max will do so well on three legs!
The stress of getting to this point in the journey is enormous!! I think I mentioned that I cancelled my Happy Hannah's first surgery appt. because I was terrified, ABSOLUTELY terrified!!
One thing I did when I picked my Happy Hannah up was not even look at her incision site. She wasn't looking at it so why should I? I just greeted her with applause and told her what a good girl she was! And, for me, once the fur started growing in I even forgot what she looked like as a four legger!
We are here for you every step of the way and can pretty much answer every question based on our first jand experience. There are just so e things that can't be covered in the "list of instructions" from the vet.
Let js know when he's out of surgery tomorrow. In the meantime, grab the CHOCOLATE and eat up every morsel of junk food you jave in the house! It helps!! It helps because when you jave a tummy ache from so much junk food you feel too sick to worry!!
Sending hugs!
