I know others don't agree with asking the vet what they would do but I've done it. Mona lost her leg due to a vaccine so she won't get another vaccine. The vet was telling me that my other cat Eli was due and I told him I'm now fearful of vaccines and asked what he'd do in my situation (not being a vet with the knowledge, financial resources , etc). He stopped to think about it and said he would not get the vaccines but may choose to run titres. I think the question helps them to pause and systematically think through the response.
Well wishes for the recovery. You are a wonderful mom and grandma to Max!

Really glad you DID ask the vet that question, especially knowing that it helped your son! As Kerren said, it helps vets pause and give some thought so they can think through their answer.
You are a wonderful, wonderful advocate! Good job!!
Hugs!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Awww what a great visit! You can't go wrong with those Cheesehead Badgers! Yay! Seriously, you are getting the very best care at UW, those vets rock. You will find that some services cost less and some cost more (usually anesthesia), but there's no comparison, university teaching hospitals provide the best care you can get. See this blog post for details.
And yes, the onco is correct; pain from a disintegrating bone is worse than anything we can imagine. Dogs are indeed very stoic, they do a great job hiding the pain until it's horrible.
Tell your son to look at our blog for Tripawds Spokesdog Wyatt Ray (see link). He's a six year old right rear leg Tripawd (due to someone's neglect, not cancer), and he does fantastic. I think once your son sees more examples of larger dogs on 3 he'll come to grips with the idea. It's a great life lesson, as tough as it is to experience, to see how animals handle adversity so much better than we do. They don't even see it as "adversity," they just see it as living life and enjoying every second they're here. Life is always good to an animal, no matter how many legs they have!

Jerry can you direct me to some videos of tripawds running and frolicking. One thing that struck me yesterday was I believe my son thought Max would never be able to run again. I know they do and I asked the oncologist if he would ever run again and she said certainly they do everything they've ever done before after the surgery. But maybe if I can show him this he'll "get it". Again thank you all for your unwavering support. You guys blow me away!
Aww you bet. Well our Tripawds Videos Page is here. You can also peruse our entire YouTube Channel.
Yes, Tripawds can do the things they always loved, but within limits and supervision. We can talk about that later but for now, here's a fun video of our Wyatt, this will make you smile:

Now if that video doesn't cheer your son up, nothing will!
Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise
And THAT is how it's done! Way to go Wyatt!!!Beautiful to watch!!

Jerry I have a hunch he's been on here. I had him read all the postings days ago so I'm betting he came on here himself to do a little more digging in the days after that. I'm betting all the support on this site helped him make his decision. You guys probably reach and help way more people than you ever thought. God Bless you for all you have done and continue to do for others!
He's a lurker! That's OK though, whatever works, just glad to know the community could be there for you guys. Everyone here makes this so special.
