Aww thanks guys, I told Charlie he's gaining a fan club on the net, but he just groaned and went back to sleep. Some pups are hard to please! There will be liberal snuggling and hugs tonight, as always!
As far as Charlie is concerned, this has been the best thing that's ever happened to him. He's allowed on the couch, he's going for more rides, and he even gets more bacon and wet food... what a deal! He's been super strong for us, the limp he started out with is now gone (Possibly because of the pain meds?) and so we don't believe he is in any pain now.
Jerry,
Wyatt looks incredible! Such a great dog! We just moved into an apartment downtown Denver, not far from the convention center. I honestly don't know if that's close to CSU or Fort Collins, but for what it's worth we would love to meet up with a local tri-pawd pack, if such a thing exists.
Benny55,
We have talked to a local vet, who gave his initial diagnosis and was very supportive. She apparently had been through bone cancer with her dog, so she had a lot of useful information for me. In-fact she told me about this site! She gave me a referral to an oncologist who saw Charlie last week. There we received confirmation on all the main points. Most likely bone cancer, caught very early, 2-4 months without treatment, and good candidate for amputation. His lungs and chest have been X-rayed, no cancer detected there. He had blood work done, and no abnormalities detected.
There have been many phone calls between us, the vet, and the oncologist. The oncologist seems to think that we may have caught this unusually early (there's a chance he was extra tender in that arm from receiving lots of shots before we moved, making him limp before he maybe ordinarily would have with just the bone cancer?) This specialist wants to run the gamut on treatments: chemo, radiation, infusions etc. We want to do everything we can for Charlie, he means everything to us! but if we did ALL of these treatments it would bankrupt us. With that in mind we are prioritizing, pain reduction & quality of life over quantity of life. It seems that the amputation route will give us the best pain reduction and quality of life. We will never be fully ready to say goodbye to are buddy, but we can do everything in our power to give Charlie the most fulfilling life before he reaches peace.

Whew! Thank goodness for the CUTENESS ALERT this time! I was able to gaze slowly at each adorable picture without getting too much of a sugar rush all at once!
Charlie is sooooo happy! I lpve the "family photo". He's posing so proudly with his humans!
A d you are absolutely spot on...amputation will give Charlie a pain free life and a lot more quality time for bacon and kisses!! As we've all said in our own way, there are no guarantees with or without treatment. It's all such a crap shoot! Through the amputation you are GUARANTEED that his pain will be gone and that's what it's all about!
Another thing you can be guaranteed is that Charlie does not have a timeframe stamped on his butt! He sounds like all his test results are really favorable and that's yet another plus!
You are wonderful advocates for Charlie! I love what you said, "As far as Charlie is concerned, this is the best thing that's ever happened to him"...because of all the extra spoiling. Such a great reminder to js humans to constantly Be More Dog ! Charlie is having a blast living in the moment worry free! Diagnosis, statistics, none of that means squat to Charlie! Bacon and car rides and scooting his butt across the sofa...now that's a happy dog!
Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Charlie just exudes gentleness and sweetness.
Hugs and love to all!

Aww you guys are pawesome, Charlie is one lucky dude! You've got the right attitude and great vet care, no dog could ask for more.
Speaking of vets, who's the vet that referred you to us? And your oncologist? We'd love to send them some free Tripawds outreach brochures to thank them.
We are about 2 hours north of you, so not exactly next door. But I know there's a lot of Tripawds packs in these part of Colorado. Hmm. Maybe it's time for another Tripawds gathering! We had one in Longmont once and had something like 40 Tripawds there, it was pawesome. No time soon though since it's still so hot but maybe when it cools off a bit.

Charlie is out of surgery and on his way to recovery. Surgeon reports no complications with minimal blood loss! Things are about as good as can be expected right now. We will get to visit Charlie later today and take him back home sometime tomorrow.
Here is a vid of some of Charlies last 4 legged steps. As you can see he is very happy and more prepared for this then we were!:
YAAAY! Really happy to hear that the surgery is over with. Whew!
He's such a hoppy boy! Love seeing his smile and waggy tail.
