Sorry to post so many posts, just trying frantically to get prepared.

What sort of crate or confinement option worked best for your dog? Was thinking something like this:

Because it looks like the door opening has a very low edge and would be easier to hop over than a regular side-open crate.

Other options and opinions appreciated.

We ended up getting two exercise pens and hooking them together. I bought an eggcrate foam mattress topper (queen), folded it over and made a cover for it using sweatshirt fabric. I liked the pens because they could come outside with us when the weather was warm.

After Murphy's recovery, he went back into his wire crate.

We did have unusual circumstances, as Murphy lost one back leg due to being hit by a car and then had a total hip replacement on the other side. He was on confinement/leash restriction for nearly seven months.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

I like x-pens as well.  If Nellie has a cone it might be hard to get in and out of the crate.  Has she been crated before?

I didn't have to confine Maggie after her surgery- it was all I could do to get her to move, and I adopted Elly after she was healed.

My quad pug Obie has had two knee surgeries and because of the history with his previous owner he did not do well confined to a crate.  I used a x-pen with him, he had to be restricted for 6 to 8 weeks each time.  It allows flexibility as far as size of the pen, you can block off part of a room and you can move them around easily.  You can also use them to block off furniture or stairs if the need arises.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

One other thing I liked about the pen was the ability to reach inside without opening the gate. We could put a food or water dish in front of him when it was necessary, and we could reach the handle on his harness to help him up.

I borrowed a crate when Tess had knee surgery.  First, she opened it and came out.  Then, when I got it dog proofed, she and Otis tore it to shreds.  Thereafter, I didn't try to restrain either dog.  Otis was pretty good about staying put.  I did spread a couple of dog beds between two first floor rooms, and blocked off the stairs and sofa at first.  Tess had a bit of the Velcro dog thing going, but I just made sure that I brought everything I needed into the "recovery room" and stayed put myself.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.
