So my 11.5 year old pitty was diagnosed with osteosarcoma three weeks ago by her primary vet, we have since seen a local oncologist, both doctors have agreed that the right move is to amputate and conduct a couple of rounds of chemo depending on her progress. The growth is on her left hock and thankfully has not spread as of five days ago.

I’m content with the idea that this is the right choice for my little baby as both vets give her a clean bill of health besides this growth and expect us to have another 4-5 years with her.

Oddly enough I rescued a tripod six years ago a month and a half out of his amputation, so I’m not nervous about the long term impact. He is missing the same leg that my little girl will have amputated.

What I do seem to be stressing out the most of the first month and a half, she’s an incredibly strong puppy, she was walking an hour out of her TPLO repair on both legs. I am probably overthinking it, but I sure am happy to have a community to help me through this.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. I'm sorry you are faced with this diagnosis but glad you found us. We are here to help however we can.

A two-time Tripawd parent? That's such a big help, you know a lot of what needs to be done. You also sound really confident, which is so helpful during recovery and beyond!

What is your girl's name?

Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away!

Love the name Nina for a Pittie.  Very sweet, as I'm sure she is too!  And another tripawd named Nicholas....like that name too.

And thankmyou for adopting  Nicholas AND for doing what needs to be done to give Nina a quality pain free life!!

Although you weren't  present for Nicholas's recovery  time, you do know what to expect afterwards.  Although Nina's recovery  from the TPLO (both legs...WOW) went so well, you may, or may not experience  the same quick  results  with the amp aurgery.  Have to say, walking on both legs right after TPLO...quite impressive.

Anyway, just stay connected  and let us know if we can help uou navigate  thru this recovery phase.  And yes, even if she is ready to "strut her stuff" by walking a lot right after surgery,  she definitely  needs to take it slow.  Leashed SHORT potty breaks and back in for eest.  Just rake it day by day and see how  she reacts to this surgery, the pain meds, etc.  It may be....and I really hate to even say this..but it may be she would need a  ilght sedative if she really is determined to do too much too soon.  .obviously  your Vet can advise IF that is necessary.

When I'd the amputation?  And good that Nina has the go ahead to proceed as s good candidate.   Is this one if the TPLO legs??  How long ago was that surgery  ??

So it's good you've been through surgery recoveries before. TPLO recoveries are harder than amputation recovery believe it or not! You are well prepared!

Yes, thank you! She’s home today, walking on her own, managing better than I thought.
