Bree is 9 days post amp, and doing pretty well. We've had some issues with pain management , especially with phantom pains. The vet increased her meds, and that seems to be helping a bit at least. I know she's not ready yet, but I was wondering when should we start trying some short walks, and how do I know when to increase them? Also, can anyone tell me a little bit about core exercises for her, and how and when to start? Thanks So Much!!

Hi Tanya and Bree,
I am so glad to hear Bree is doing well post-amp. It is still very early in the recovery and while I am not a vet, I do believe Shelby didn't do much of anything until after her stitches were out. Just basic potty breaks and that was it. I know it's hard if they want to move and be active but rest is really crucial for a great recovery. I think it's also important to realize that balance is a good thing once you get active again ... little walks, maybe a few steps further each time. Most tripawds don't go back to running marathons (ha ha) but realize that shorter yet more frequent walks are great for them and their fitness.
Is she doing well otherwise? Sounds like her recovery is going as it should be so YAY!!!
hugs,

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Hi Tanya and Bree, so glad things are going great!
If you are able to take Bree to a rehab vet I would really encourage it. You'll learn so much, they'll develop a custom program for Bree and Tripawds Foundation will even pay for your first consult, the most expensive visit. See:

What was her previous fitness level like before surgery? That will really determine what kind of exercise she should be doing now.
