Hey friends, it has been a while... I looked upon the pages before posting to see if anyone else brought up a similar topic but I didn't find anything.

I took my boy hiking yesterday and our hike wound up being much longer than anticipated. So long in fact that the last little stretch of it was mostly spent carrying him back to the car. Niko is a front leg amputee, and it was his remaining front leg that was bothering. Well, I thought it was his leg. It turned out to be his paw pad, the large part. Half of it has a layer ripped clean off. No bleeding, nothing, just worn dopywn.

Obviously my dog is unhappy. He kept licking it so I had no choice but to cover it and use athletic tape with some stickiness worn off to keep it from sliding off. He will hardly walk and he's so unhappy.

Any tips on how to get this to heal and make him comfortable as fast as possible? I imagine I will have to uncover it at a point to let it dry, in which case I'll have to get him some kind of collar or cone.

Anyone else deal with anything similar?

Any help is appreciated, thank you!! 🙂

Well Niko, you certainly had a good time! And having your hooman carry you back after all yoir fun was very nice of him.

Do you happen to have any Gabapentin  or Tramadol  around?  It may help until uoi can get to a Vet

I found one link that had a little bit of info.  Not exactly your situation, but similar.  Also, be sure and check out the links that are in the actual replies.  I know Epsom Salt was mentioned.  Others may chimein with more  help.

Check this out:    https://tripawd.....ling-pads/

Keep is posted.

Awww poor pupperz!

Thank you so much for your feedback Dr. Pam! That is good to know. We need to add NuSkin to our first aid kit.

Niko may need a cone of shame to keep him from licking at the bandage though. I hope he feels better soon!

You may also want to consider having a check-in with a canine rehab therapist, just to see where Niko is at in terms of his physical stamina and strength. That way you'll know for sure what he is and isn't capable of as far as hiking distances and such. The Tripawds Foundation may pay for your first rehab visit so be sure to take advantage of the program OK?

Quick question - NuSkin or New-Skin?  The former seems to be a line of beauty care products and the latter is a liquid bandage.  If it is NuSkin, could you please provide a link as I can't find it.  Thanks!

Griffin lived an amazing life for 11 years! Diagnosed with osteosarcoma on March 17, 2020, Griffin's right forelimb was amputated on April 2, 2020. Ten days later he was running and playing fetch! Lung metastasis discovered in July 2020 did not slow down Griffin and he lived joyfully for the next 7 months, passing peacefully at home on February 11, 2021. https://griffin.tripawds.com

Not sure if this is the same thing, but many years back my parents used 2nd Skin dressings on an elderly dog who had injured his paw.  Basically it was a water gel cushion bandage, similar to what many use for blister protection while hiking.

Good catch Stacy! Pretty sure she meant New-Skin Liquid Bandage.

Yes I meant NewSkin; I thought it was spelled the other way.
