Hi all.... we been off the grid for a bit, things have been going great with Tre (2.5 weeks post amp, rear).... yesterday he overdid it or tweaked his back leg.... it's  swollen, xrays showed no break and nothing significant but he is so swollen and is hardly able to walk on it. We are sling carrying him again and keeping him confined. Does anyone know of a natural remedy to help speed up his healing? We are devastated for him. And scared to death. He is already on Rimadyl, Tramadol and Gabapentin. Max dose for Rimadyl seems to be 200mg a day which he is on. 😞😢

Ugh, this is just rotten! Geez, just 2.5 weeks after amputation. It certainly does happen though.

So the vet eliminated things like a liga.e t tear or knee issues, right. These things, as well as a bad sprained muscle can cause a lot of swelling. Regardless, the Rimadyl is pretty much what the treatment would be, as well as the pain meds.

Complete rest and minimal usage is the best thing you can do. I know this is scary AND frustrating, but at least it's treatable and fixable...with a whole lot of patience and rest.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of a natural a ti inflammatory for dogs, but I do know I've seen them mentioned here. Perhaps you can try doing a search here and see what shows up. I know you don't one to keep him on tne maximum dose of Rimadyl very long.

Sorry I'm no immediate help. Others with more insight will chime in.

Hang in there! This is yet another bump in the road on this crazy journey. You'll get past it and Tre will start feeling better soon.

Sending healing energy...

Cold therapy reduces swelling and inflammation. You can apply a cold pack (wrapped in a pillowcase) until the area feels cool and possibly gently massage the area. Tre will let you know how it feels and what he likes. Also you might want to check this out with your vet first.

Hope Tre feels better soon.

p.s. I would be cautious about self-administering turmeric (curcumin) without professional advice on the dosage. A cat with the same cancer as my cat was given curcumin and the cat's blood pressure dropped. They found out that the curcumin blocks iron absorption and the cat is now recovering (except for the tumour unfortunately). I have read about a curcumin product developed specifically for cats and dogs called Curcuvet and has clear dosages based on weight.

I'm sorry to hear that, I know how worrisome this is.

Good that you've got the pain under control with some medication which will hopefully kick in soon. Has he always been on that combo? Kerren, thanks for that tip, I also recommend talking to a holistic-minded vet before ever beginning a natural remedy.

Now my question for Tre & co is, what was your vet's recommendation for next steps? Obviously R&R but anything else like a referral to a vet rehab therapist?  If so, the Tripawds Foundation will pay for that first visit so please, consider it, as they have the skills and knowledge to pinpoint the real issue and help him heal faster. It's not just pain medication or herbal remedies that will heal, it's a combo of pain management , massage, gentle stretching and exercise. A vet rehab therapist can help.

My other question is, how did he tweak his leg? What do you think caused it? And what his is recent activity level like?

Oh gosh, DEFINITELY do NOT administer any herb, or anything else, without getting the advice of a professional! Thanks for making that clear Kerren!
