Hi I am new on here, please forgive me if this is not in the correct spot. I need help!! I have a pack of special needs babies. 2 Pitties and a Rottie. The one that is concerning me right now is Tyson. He is 5 almost 6 and was extremely abused as a pup. He was used for bait, shot when he didn't die and left in the garbage. His front leg had to be amputated to save his life, it is a full limb amputation. I brought him home after surgery and he has done well, in fact too well, lol he is on a diet to lose some weight. In the past few months he has started having weakness in his remaining front paw. I can see that the wear and tear is taking it's toll .I have a wheel cart for him but he is overwhelmed with it so I'm wondering if there are any braces out there that can give added support to his leg. They are just now starting to develop full limb prosthetics but I'm hoping to get something that would help him in the house. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated!!!
Hi Tyson and the pack! Thanks for joining, your future posts won’t need approval so post away.
We see this a lot in dogs that have put on too much weight, so it’s great that you are helping him to slim down. Yes, there are braces that can help with a front wrist (carpal) support. But before putting him in anything it’s critical to have him evaluated by a canine rehab therapist. They can assess Tyson for the reasons behind his mobility issues and give you exercises and guidance to help him get and stay strong.
You don’t want to put him in a brace or even a wheelchair before having him evaluated. Doing so can cause more harm than good.
The Tripawds Foundation has a program where we will pay for your first rehab visit so please take advantage of it! If you’d like help finding a practitioner let us know.

I just wanted to thank you for giving Tyson a second chance. I would like to take the person who abused Tyson and use him for bait, shoot him, and then leave him in the garbage and see how he likes it. Sorry, but this makes me so angry!
I have a senior lab with front leg amputation. After he lost weight he gets around a lot better.
I hope everything turns out great for you and your pack. I'm sure with Tyson having you everything will be fine.
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!

Thank you Jerry! To be honest I did not know there was a canine rehab therapist. I would like to know if there any in my area. I've moved from Chicago to a rural area in Indiana, my dogs have a chance to recover from the life they had. I let him put on a few too many pounds and see what a mistake that was. Sure I would like to know if there are any close!!! thank you
Thanks to Brownie1201 too, I completely understand, I get so upset as well. My other bull was handed to me from the same rescue in the city, she was just as bad. Broken legs that were never reset, broken teeth, nails grown into the pads and full of parasites, she pulled through but I can't fathom the cruelty that people do. My Rottie is puppy mill and still trying to get her healthy. Thanks for the kind thoughts!!
Brownie is a rescue but his abuse was neglect. My little Max I adopted from a shelter. His owners moved and just left him. My beagle mix was a stray. I think she was dumped because she was in season.
You know what they say. The best breed is a rescue!
You will find a lot of rescues on this site as well as a lot of good people who rescued them.
When Brownie was first diagnosed with cancer he put on weight because of all the guilt treats I gave him. Lol. As Jerry said Tyson will get around much better if he drops a few lbs. How long have you had Tyson? Did he loose his leg when he was a puppy?

Being a Tripawd parent is a learning curve but you are asking all the right questions, you're doing great! Can you do me a favor and Private Message me your city and zip? I can search for a therapy center better if I have that info. The Private Message feature is accessed by clicking on the little envelope to the right of the time-stamp located at top of this post. Or, you can feel free to call the Tripawds Helpline anytime and we can do it that way too.

thanks Brownie, sounds like you have quite a crew as well!! Tyson is my only amputee. The other one Kahlua still has all 4 legs but her bones are very crippled as they were broken and never set. He was a pup when all this happened, approx. 8 months old. When he was found the vets tried to save his leg, but he was so bad that it was a decision of amputating to try and save his life. I got him when he was healed enough and we were sure infection was gone. I have had him about 5 years, he will be 6 soon. He did great in his younger years, I didn't realize what a pounding that front leg takes at first but I know now and need to get him help now
