Doxie is close to 6 weeks post-amputation of her right hind leg (cancer). She's been overall doing really well and has started chemo, etc. Since she's hopping around more and more I just noticed she seems to be developing sores on the pads of her feet on remaining rear leg. When I noticed them 2 days ago I rinsed her feet off with water and put some neosporin on the sores and coconut oil on the other areas and other feet pads.
We still have snow up here right now and a lot of puddles with icemelt so I'm sure that was drying out her pads really quickly and they already look better today, before they were pink and red 🙁
Anyone else run into this happening on a regular basis and any advice on how to prevent it? I'm not looking forward to trying booties, I don't think she will take well to them. I have heard people using balloons to cover the feet (and mostly give traction on slippery floors) so I might give that a shot before investing in some booties and see if she will tolerate that at all first.
I can't figure out how to put a picture in here so I made a new blog post with it: http://doxiethe.....-paw-pads/
Doxie the Italian Mastiff lost her right rear leg to osteosarcoma on 3/9/2017 and has been hopping happily since!
I can't find the picture right now but we used socks that have a rubber coating. More for traction on snow and ice than anything else but they worked great and were cheap. I think they were from Grau via amazon. Manni wasn't all that enthused but it was worth a try.

The end of our adventures came Dec 10, 2017. 2 years to the day.

We always recommend starting with Power Paws traction socks or Pawz booties first before investing in dog boots, to ensure the dog will tolerate wearing items on the feet. Some just will not have it.
Wyatt also recently reviewed PawFriction, though this would only be used to help improve traction indoors and nor necessarily provide serious paw pad protection outdoors. Musher's secret is another helpful solution. Details about all these items (and others) can be found in the traction post.

I had great luck with Musher's Secret on Tripug Maggie's paws, she was also a rear amp. It kept her paws conditioned and supple which kept them healthy and also helped with her traction . It does go on a bit greasy so you have to be sure to massage it into the pads really well.
I used Pawz Booties with quag pug Tani to help her with traction , she had life long mobility issues which got worse as she aged. She could not keep her feet under her on the floors at the vets offices. They are cheap and re-usable and an easy way to find out if Doxie would tolerate them. You can't leave them on too long as the feet get wet, but they are great for short time use.

Hi Doxie and family,
Eurydice wears booties when we go to the forest or walk in paved areas, no booties on the beach or in grass areas.
She is really big and very heavy so her paws were not good at all until we introduced the booties.
Applying cream helps, Flamazine and Fucidine are really fantastic but you'll need a vet's prescription to get it.
I agree with others you may want to try a lighter booty or sock beforehand.
What I will say is, for my Dane, it was day and night, when she wears them she is much happier and more energetic as they are padded and super comfy.
By the way, I am giving away brand new XL booties I got for my girl (they were far too small) would they suit Doxie?
Sending you hugs and cuddles to your cutie 😘😘💕🐶
Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
Thanks everyone! I ordered some of the mushers cream and some socks for her to try, until they get her I put a baby sock on her to try to keep the sores clean and She's tolerating it really well so I think she will take to booties soon! Thank you for the offer on the booties, I'll PM you and see if they would fit her or not 🙂 Thanks again everyone!!!
