10 year old Sofia became a tripaw in June. She has adapted pretty well as long as our walks stay under 20 minutes. Sometimes I have to carry her back to the car; she lets me know. I believe her discomfort is mostly due to hyper extending her carpus joint. Even though she is only 30 lbs, her joint clearly needs support. Wondering if I can get some advice from those who have used braces.
Which ones have been tried and shown effective? How well do our tripawds adjust them? Are they used primarily for walks or just left on throughout the day?
Hello and welcome to you and Sofia!
Why did she lose her leg?
Have you gone to a rehab vet to have Sofia evaluated? It would be a good place to start and we have a reimbursement program here that could pay for your first visit. Here is a link to certified rehab practitioners.
From what I have read it is really important that if a brace is needed and used that it fits correctly. Some here have gone through Ortho Pets for braces. Go to the link for lots of info on braces- there is also a lot of info there about prosthetics but sort through to find the great info on braces.
I have not used braces for either of my two rear leg Tripawds but I have used strollers for them. Both of them were/are smaller than Sofia but many pet strollers available will easily hold 30 pounds. Just another option to consider.
