We adopted Fred from a local shelter he is 15 months old and we were told he had a bad break in his right rear leg. Fred just had his 3 month ampiversary. He has no trouble at all getting around, sometimes he scares me the way he races around. Should we be limiting his activity?

He really is a love and prefers to sit on someones lap.

He is a beagle mix. I'll have to research posting pics.

Hi Butch and Fred, welcome! Thank you for adopting from a shelter. Did you know the Tripawds Foundation reimburses adoption fees for Tripawds? See: http://tripawds.....wd-rescue/

You ask great questions about activity. As a young doggie, Butch has lots of mobility and stamina. But as he ages, if he is doing the wrong kinds of activity, his body will pay for it. So the short answer is yes, we as pet parents do need to monitor and regulate a Tripawds's activity in order to preserve those joints and mobility into old age. That doesn't mean you need to wrap him in bubble wrap, but it does mean being extra conscientious about the type of activity you're allowing him to do.

Have you seen the Tripawds Gear blog ? Or Jerry's Required Reading List ? These areas in our community are filled with tons of great insight on appropriate activity for Tripawds. Also, our Tripawds e-books are awesome references, especially Loving Life On Three Legs . I encourage you to hop over to check them out.

Tell us more about what his day is like? How long are his walks? Do you have other dogs in the house? Does he ever show any signs of tiring out, like sitting down on walks or sleeping really hard at night or in daytime hours?

Here's a post about adding images to the Forums. If you'd like assistance just holler OK?

Thanks again for joining!

Butch is my name lol. We have another beagle who is 10 yrs they get along well. They chase each other around in the yard and come in to get a drink after 2 or 3 min of play. Fred sleeps through the night and naps during the day. He likes to get me up at 4am to go outside to pee.

Hello and welcome!

How big is Fred?  My current tripawd is a pug mix who lost her right rear leg at 7 months old after being hit by a car. I adopted Elly when she was 10 months old, she is now about 2.5 years old.  I have an almost 11 year old pug that Elly pesters into playing with her big-grin

I spend time every day working on Elly's core strength and balance through food puzzles and games, obedience and trick training, and balance/strength exercises on our fitbone and balance disc.  We don't do everything every day- for example the balance exercises are usually every other day.  You can look at Elly's blog to see some of our activities.

I let Elly do what she wants- within reason.  I built stairs to help her get up and down on the furniture so she is not jumping.  We do walk almost everyday- but not for too long and I try to keep her on grass as much as possible.  I look for activities that make her think but are still fun, hence the food games and puzzles.  We have been doing Nose Work since January and it is great! She loves it, it is low stress on her joints, challenges her mind, and all that sniffing really wears her out!

I can't wait to see pictures of Fred! The rescue group told me Elly was a Puggle, but after two DNA tests (and really some common sense) it's clear she has no Beagle in her.  She does however track like a Beagle-  I think one of the reasons she loves Nose Work so much.
