I am new here and my dog Tramp is coming up on a year since his right rear leg was amputated. Originally when we found him as a stray we thought he had been hit by a car, but soon realized he had been shot and his femur shattered.  The bullet wound had already healed over when we found him so he was actually somewhat relieved to loose the dangling leg he had been dragging along.  We initially intended to fix him up and then adopt him out, but he made it clear he was home so we kept him.   He is a great dog and we love him tons.  His full story can be found here--http://www.gofundme.com/fixtrampup

Tramp has been doing great but today he seems to be having some weakness in his rear leg and has been struggling more than normal.  Probably just strained, but I am hoping for some tips on how to manage the inevitable strains and pains that go with life as a tripawd.

Hello and welcome, thanks for joining, your future posts won't need approval.

Tramp is so lucky to have you for his family. Let's hear it for foster failures! clapHe had such a hard start in life, it's wonderful you're showing him not all humans are terrible.

There are a number of reasons why a Tripawd would suddenly become sore so it's hard to pinpoint what might be the cause. First of all, try to think back and remember:

  • what was he doing in the days just prior to showing symptoms?
  • what kind of activity is he allowed to do, and for how long?
  • are you giving him enough time to heal? during this time, are you icing the area and trying massage?
  • what's his weight like? does he need to lose some?

Although Tripawds are more prone to joint stress and injury, being a Tripawd doesn't always have to mean aches and pains. Our own Wyatt Ray is 6 years old and he rarely has pain, and he's been a Tripawd since 8 month old. When he has shown signs of being exhausted, it's because we let him do too much. It's especially important for us to monitor their lifestyle to make sure that doesn't happen. There's a fine line between too much and not enough exercise, and we tend to learn things as we go. The Tripawds second e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs , goes over this along with providing lots of direction for helping to avoid the aches and pains that might happen when too much activity is allowed.

If you can pinpoint the answers to the above questions maybe we can help you eliminate the cause, but your vet is your best bet when trying to figure this out if symptoms don't subside in a few days.

Our Murphy was a rear Tripawd due to being hit by a car. We took him to a canine rehab specialist following his total hip replacement. He went back for periodic tuneups over the next couple of years. The exercises, laser treatments and acupuncture worked wonders. If you have access to a rehab vet, I would sure give that a try.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
