Hello,
I have noticed that Booey is very protective of his residual limb (stump) with other dogs. Dogs, I think are innocently curious, (I think..) and look to sniff him here. He is not cool with this. He gets very upset, barks, growls, or spins so they can't sniff. As for humans, he is fine with us touching and massaging him anywhere on his body, with zero issues. Has anyone else noticed this in their dogs? Is it because his private area is more exposed? and that is making him feel vulnerable? What are folk's thoughts?
Hi Selina,
It's not common for that to happen but it's also not unheard of. Our Wyatt would react the same way sometimes, and eventually we figured out it was that he was painful in his spine and that was his way of defending himself when he felt vulnerable.
I'm thinking Boo trusts you more so of course he won't react the same way that he does with other dogs unless he's suuuper painful. Of course he could be feeling vulnerable too, that's fair.
My suggestion is to try to use the old distraction with treats method when other dogs come near. Have a friend come over with their dog he's been defensive around. Be ready with treats so as the dog comes closer, you can turn his head toward you with a treat or two while the other dog sniffs. Try it a few times and see what happens.
