Hi ! I wanted to reach out and see if anyone had experience with orthotic/ prosthetics for their pets. This is not regarding my tripaw as she was declined unfortunately for a prosthetic but we been working hard with therapy and strengthening her up.
My question is concerned with my 2 year old German shepherd who was born with a disformity and is missing essentially her whole hind paw obviously causing issue walking and weight bearing. Her one orthopedic said amputation will be needed if she doesn’t utilize the leg so I searched and have been talking with ortho pets who have been wonderful. Do to her dosformity they suggest surgery to remove the rest of the toe bones that are remaining inside prior to being fitted for her boot because sores and other complication can occur with the way her bone is formed . I’m so nervous to proceed with surgery because I don’t know how well she will adjust to the boot . She walks funny because it sensitive so I know this is the right thing .just wanted to see if anyone had experience with the boots and how there pup adjusted . Essentially there is no going back if we proceed with the surgery because they would be taking about inch of so off of what she has now ( where the paw would be it’s a stump) ortho pets has been nothing but amazing ! Sorry for rambling just a nervous mom trying to get some feedback ! Thank you
If only the paw is missing (or deformed) your pup may be an excellent candidate for a prosthetic. Click any highlighted prosthetics link for plenty of articles, podcasts and videos about prosthetics , and consider contacting Orthopets directly for more information regarding your specific case.

I didn’t realize there were podcasts that’s exciting . I have been directly talking to ortho pets for the last few weeks as we are setting everything up and planning accordingly with them to make sure everything is done properly . Thank you so much ! I know I can always count on this community for re assurance and advice !
Our 18 mo old Border Collie/Great Pyrenees has been going through the process since she was 8 mos old - Watching her grow, casting her, a fitting, and finally today the prosthetic to start using slowly. We live near UC Davis Veterinary School and so have been going through their Rehab department with Dr Jamie Peyton. I know from talking to her and to Dr Denis Marcellin-Little, that how good a candidate the dog is, will depend on how much residual limb they have; along with other factors. Our puppy is a good enough candidate but a lot of it we hear is the pup herself and if she will accept it. I hope to get any tips or feedback that any members who have a dog with a prosthetic would like to share!
Hello and welcome sperich, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
Please consider starting your own thread to introduce your pup- what is her name?
It's great she is a candidate for a prosthetic. We would love to follow her progress getting used to it and how she does long term. Not too many members here that can use them- so often here the amp is due to cancer and the whole limb has to go. Or like with my current Tripawd- she was hit by a car and all of the femur had to be removed.
Also- we have a fairly active NorCal Tripawds group that gets together at the Mill Valley Dog park twice a year or so- our next meet up will probably be in May. Keep an eye on the Tripawds Party forum if you are interested.

Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome and I appreciate the suggestions and information! Our dogs name is Macie Mae. She came to us via a rescue sanctuary in Willits CA. I will start a thread as you recommended. I am becoming aware that her situation is more rare than many of the other wonderful dogs out there. I will most certainly keep everyone updated as soon as I learn how to use this site lol, and I look forward to the Tripawd get-together! Macie Mae loves other dogs. Mill Valley isn't too far away. Really cool to know that you are only a few miles away from us in Livermore! Wow:)
