Rocky had a left rear amputation on the 15th. Today we are having a problem getting up and about. We were using a sling to help him up, that was giving him pain because it put pressure where he is bruised. He has been getting up by himself, but now he help when he gets up and plops right back down. Any suggestions or thoughts would really help.
Hi Rocky and family, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.
First, remember, this is super early in recovery and quite normal (although I know it's scary and emotional for you!). First, what pain meds is he on? Pain meds can make dogs dopey, which is fine because rest is medicinal right now.
Describe what you mean by getting him up and about. Is it just to go potty? If it's anything more than that, he shouldn't be doing it. Potty breaks are all that's needed right now. For most dogs, that's two or three times a day max, depending on the dog.
Finally, do your floors have traction ? If not, that could also be an issue.
I hope this helps. Let us know OK? I see that you blogged, I'll be checking it out this weekend. Stay strong and know that you will have this behind you before you know it!

We were just trying to encourage him to get up for potty. He is on tramadol, gabapentin and fentanyl patch. He also takes deramaxx and traumeel. He had a bad first day home with not enough pain relief so he was up a lot. Guess I was thinking with good pain relief he would be up more. Thank you your response. I won't worry so much. Actually he just popped up to take enough steps to turn around and is back asleep. Did whine once. I will just wait for him to decide he is ready to go potty
Nice to see you in the forums!
Jerry is right- Rocky should be spending most of his time resting. He is probably a bit groggy from the meds and that one back leg is going to be a bit tired and sore for a bit. Once he is healed up you can work on his strength.
He had back surgery not too long ago right? So he wasn't at his strongest going into the amp surgery. He might take a little more time to get strong and stable on his feet.
He will get there!

Yep! Ditto Karen and Jerry!
Plis, the patch can make dogs a bit whacky and woozy sometimes.
Glad to hear he got up on his own, even if it was just a few steps. We call that IMPROVEMENT!! He'll get the ha ge of it soon. I know its so hard to be patient, but recovery just can't be rushed. Znd every dog's recovw is differew, so try not to make ccomparisons, okay?
Keep us updated. TRY and get some rest!
Hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Thanks for the support and encouragement. Rocky did get up this am and went out for potty and he stood to eat breakfast so that made me feel better. The back surgery was just 3 weeks before the amputation, it just seems like a lifetime ago. Rocky seems very frustrated today and he is at least farting now. Maybe the pumpkin puree is starting to work.
