Last week my son and I took Nova and my other dog to go visit relatives in the mountains of NC. I wasn't sure what Nova would be able to handle, in terms of hiking and climbing stairs and uphill, plus a 12-hour car ride each way. She's normally just a big ol' couch potato. I had no idea what to expect.  Well, aside from some lousy, unseasonably cold and rainy weather, she was just AMAZING. I am so proud of my girl. And to think that there are people (and vets!) who think that giant breeds can't cut it on 3 legs. HA!

My beautiful Nova hiked to the top of Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain East of the Mississippi:

Nova at the Summit of Mt. Mitchell

She climbed up 4 flights of stairs (and came back down too!) to visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain, NC:

She hiked an icy trail beneath the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway:

She visited my family's historic Orchard on the Blue Ridge Parkway:

And she traveled over 1700 miles round trip going to do all this stuff!

So listen all "New" Tripawds, and Tripawds-to-Be!  Don't let anyone tell you there is no life on 3 legs! You can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! Don't let 3 legs keep you from making the most of every single moment of your life! If Nova can do it, YOU CAN TOO!

Those are great pictures!  Tazzie does not have the stamina to do something like that but then again she was always a couch potato even with four legs.

Pam - Nova is the biggest lazy-butt there is!  That is what makes this whole trip of hers so amazing. She has spent her life lounging on the furniture, occasionally going outside, but always the "housecat". She NEVER did this stuff on 4 legs.

Also take note, Nova is blind in her left eye (from glaucoma). So not only did she do this on 3 legs, but with only 1 eye.

Nova is my new hero ... reminds me of the old joke about a three legged dog, deaf and blind in one eye, who answers to the name of Lucky!

Nova is lucky indeed to have you. Big Grin

Oh what a fantastic story.  It just brought tears to my eyes.  I know what wonderful pets great danes are and I sure miss mine a lot.  I don't think there's a better breed of dog out there... I'm glad you and Nova have made it through these challenges!! Superstar
