Hi there all!
I am new to the site and very new to tripawd parenting. Just yesterday afternoon I came across this puppy online, and within 2 hours I was on my way to rescue her, 2 and a half hours away in another state. Her name is Casey, a 10 week old(tomorrow, Jan. 19th) golden retriever puppy who I have been told was born with only 3 legs! When I first saw her picture and read her story, I instantly fell in an overwhelming amount of love. And the second I finally met her was when I realized this angel was going to change my life forever!
I couldn't get a check up appointment with my vet until later this week, seen as how it was such a sudden decision to get her. It looks as if a deformed leg may have been somehow removed after birth, leaving her with a small little stump up to the elbow. It doesn't look infected currently, though it looks as though it has had a difficult time healing up from her maybe stumbling on rough surfaces learning to walk? It looks like it may have been open at one point but it is mostly scabbed over.
I have already fallen head over heels for this girl, she couldn't be any more perfect in my eyes. She is just the sweetest, most gentle, most happy girl I have ever seen! First night at home, she slept through the whole night, 9 hours, without a peep, curled up right next to my side! And our 8 month old Chocolate Lab is slowly learning how to adjust to having a delicate new baby sister to play with.
Some of my main questions are regarding any suggested beneficial supplements to start her on, such as those for her bones/joints/etc.? And also maybe some type of ointment or sock/wrap of sorts to cover the problem area until she is seen by the vet? I want to prevent any sort of infection or problems until then. I plan on getting her a good harness, and also one of the float vests so that we can start some swimming lessons this spring/summer!
Any help and advice is much appreciated for this new tripawd mommy!
Oh, my goodness! I can see why you fell in love with her! She is adorable! I can't offer a lot of advice on the stump area except, is she licking or chewing at it? Then, maybe a cone? Would a baby sock work to help protect it? Maybe with some gauze wrapped around it inside to protect it from bumps. I have a 3 year old Tripawd that I rescued a year and a half ago. He also has severe hip displaysia. I've have him on Dasaquin. I figure that I can maybe prevent some damage early on. The fact that she has a stump may be good news in the future in that she may be a candidate for a prosthetic leg. I do know that my Tripawd is happy, healthy and has no idea he is missing anything. Good luck and bless you for rescuing this precious girl. Lori, Ty and Gang
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
I don't have a lot of advice but bless your heart!!! She is TOO precious and so lucky to have found you!!! Casey will do great... like Lori said, tripawds dogs are the best and they have no clue they are missing that leg! I would definitely download the ebooks on this site as they give lots of info on the best way to condition and exercise your tripawds as their needs are a bit different.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
